My Scion xB had the same setup with a VVT-I engine, and the owners manual itself states clearly that after driving for a consecutive number of miles the engine will automatically begin to respond to the way the person is driving the vehicle...In short, you have a heavy foot on the gas, the car will want to take off all the time and easily get up to speed...Baby the car and then suddenly need a boost of acceleration and you won't find it right away...
If being driven by more than one driver on a regular basis, the computer will always be adapting to the person behind the wheel at the time...This would easily explain these occurrences taking place while the car is still cold...Once the car is warmed up enough time would have elapsed for the computer to set the engine response to the current driver again...I know it sounds like a stretch, but this is all true for Scions, and to me VVT would likely function the same no matter what car is equipped with it...
