so ive seen a couple of people on here with an external wastegate setup on a stock t25. i trust more an external wastegate WAY more that the crappy oe wastegate acutator.how do i go about making this possible? does anyone supply a pre-fabbed manifold with the flange already on it??

obx, thunder, mam i believe...
you will have to weld your internal gate shut

if you have the stock turbo, i doubt you are at the point where you should even worry about changing to an external setup.

yes the oem diaphragm tears, so replace the actuator with an aftermarket unit. ATP makes a nice replacement.

its not for performance sake, but more so for reliability sake.... i know my car is not exactly hulk material nor do i want it to be im just tryin to gather up as much info on this deranged beast we call a car so i can kink out the really bad things and try to have fun with it. besides im only lookin to do small bolt-ons to this car ive learned my lesson about building blocks and trannies with my last cars :/

my point exactly. you do not need to change to an external setup for your goals.

the stock unit is not reliable. so replace it. its not the design of the internal wastegate, its the diaphragm in the wastegate actuator that fails.

ATP makes a 6-8 psi replacement wastegate actuator. put that on and you have a reliable setup!

an external wastegate does control boost better than an internal wastegate, but for what your doing to the car, it doesnt make any sense for you to switch. at your boost levels, the internal design works just fine. save your money!!!

Just in case you need a stock mani with a external WG flange. Pm me

Somewhat noobish question but what is involved in making the stock mani external ready. Do you drill it out and weld the flange/wg in or do you drill it tap it in or both? Also exactly how loud is an external wg that doesn't dump back into the exhaust. I think my atp unit is dying and I don't feel like swapping a new one in every year. Are external wg's consistant? No more questions lol. Thanks to the thread starter, I've been meaning to ask about this setup.

The stock exhaust manifold would need a flange welded onto it for the external wastegate. You will then either route the exhaust back into the exhaust pipe or to atmosphere. You will also need to weld the wastegate flapper shut on the turbo itself.

I do not recommend altering the stock exhaust manifold. It is prone to cracking in its stock form, so putting a wastegate on it would only be detrimental.

I have never heard open dump from a wastegate on a protege, so i cannot help you out there. But your location says San Jose, and i am assuming that is San Jose, California. You will not be emissions legal with open dump there...

Yes, external wastegates are consistent, but for 99.9% of MSP owners, an internal wastegate is more than sufficient.

an external dump is loud... when i first installed my turbo i thought something was wrong... but after my friend rode in my car he said that's your wastegate screaming you fool
and yes you will not pass emissions...
external wastegates and BOV venting to atmosphere is illegal in all states

I will be running a dump tube with my JGS wastegate and Hiboost mani.

here is the wastegate I am getting:

Im going to bump a old thread here because I am wanting to clock my stock msp turbo and instead of fabbing up a setup to hold the stock WGA I just figured I would take the steedspeed I have and get a external wastegate welded on it and do it that way. I am wanting to know alot of things here.

1. What size waste gate should i go with. the tail 44mm just seems huge for what im trying to do.

2. Is there a good spot to put a external Wastegate flange on the stock steedspeed replacement?

3. I need any and all info I can get on this.

This is something I am looking forward to doing around Christmas time since I will be off with school and I will have time to work on the car. Thanks guys.

kooldino welded it right to the front of the steedspeed mani
i'm running a 38mm tial and have no problems... mine is welded only on one runner... i don't think it really matter where you put it cuz the exhaust will take the path of least resistance through the wastegate

Can I see pics of your setup? I am thinking of having it put right where the o2 sensor is on my steedspeed manifold and then relocating that sensor to the j pipe and getting a new bung welded in the j pipe for my wideband.

most people will tell you not to have it on just one runner, but the people who have it that way say they havent had any problems
so i guess its whatever u want to do

and anybody have a cast manifold welded for E. WG? i want to have mine welded but im not sure how well people can weld cast materials

I ran a stock MSP manifold for over a year without any problems. Then did a external WG on a thunder. Still on the car. To weld cast iron can be done, but the manifold has to be heated almost red hot and then the flange welded into place.

Yeah, im just gonna get it put in my steedspeed manifold I think. So I still have not heard of anyone that has clocked the stock turbo?? Is it hard to do? I figured I would run a EWG so I wouldnt have to fab up some bracket to fit with the stock WGA.
