Exhaust woes...

Sooo....I'm doing some heavy research on a TBE for my next upgrade. I was leaning heavily towards the full corksport system with an added cat. My main concerns after talking to the folks at Corksport (Great folks by the way!!!) is that my car could smoke depending on my luck with the seals in my turbo. Not to mention a catless system tends to smell bad. My car is only 2 months old and I really don't want to find out that my turbo seals are bad after I put a full TBE which could cause who knows what kind of fun with the dealer and warranty issues etc. I know they have to prove that my TBE caused the issue but that sounds like a lot of potential headaches and time spent that I'd rather spend driving my car. How many of you all that have put on an aftermarket TBE experienced any smoking or leaking turbo seals?

I know the different options in terms of doing a mid pipe and CBE but I want the full performance gain. I think I really want a high performance cat as well. Full catless does not sound or smell like something I want to endure. Emissions is another issue I really don't want to fight with. Here in Washington, in the area I live in, we have to pass emissons every other year after the vehicle is 5 years old. I'm not as worried about the emissions part as I am CELS, leaky turbo seals and quality. I'm not a fan of the loud fart can sound. I prefer a much deeper more substantial tone to the exhaust as well when I get on it, not at normal cruising speeds. Thanks for any information any of you would be willing to share.

putting on the TBE will not CAUSE the turbo seals to leak, the stock exhaust (cats) just can hide it. I'd rather find out if the turbo is bad now rather than later once the warranty is up or something. Your car is pretty new, it probably already has the new turbo so I'm thinking you'll be fine...worst case scenario you'll have to put the stock stuff back on to get warranty work, but thats better thank having a bad turbo and not knowing about it i guess

I understand that the TBE will not cause the turbo itself to leak. I doubt my turbo is leaking but paying to put a full upgraded TBE on my car just to find out it is, then dealing with the dealership and the whole warranty fight just doesn't appeal to me. I guess I could go with the MS exhaust (sad2).

Is it better to wait for a while to put on a TBE or is it a simple case of bad turbo vs. healthy existing turbo? I can put it on now and hope the turbo is a new one and working great or I can roll the dice and put it on later. Thanks again!

I have a catted DP on my 2008 with no issues (knock on wood)...
You should be fine!! I'd rather know if I'm leaking oil now instead of finding out later after my cats and sensors are all damaged!!

What year is your MS3? 2008 I assume... You should be fine...

I chose a catted DP because I didn't want a smelly exhaust and choke up everyone behind me...

DO IT!!!!! (2thumbs)

I'll have to research more I guess! Small addiction of mine

Anyone know of a dual exhaust kit/lower valance kit for our cars?

Dual exhaust would be sweet... Haven't come across it...
I doubt you will ever... there is no routing for it in the under-carriage.

I guess you can always have a muffler shop custom make one.

I question if our cars even need dual exhaust. A system that's too big will kill flow quality and hence power output.

That, and I don't know how you'd route it under the car and out the bumper.

I wouldn't say we "need" a dual exhaust, I was just pondering how it would look on our cars and thought it would look good. I'm not tight wad but unless there is a noticeable gain from fabricating a dual exhaust set up, the pondering will simply remain just that a fleeting thought heheh. I'll find the right set up in time.

STR-4s had them...and they looked nice...
I little disturbing since its a 4-cyl and does not need it...but still looked good.

SRT-4s needed everything they could to get away from the "Its a neon" image. However, I've seen a bunch with single exhaust conversions (or side pipes...yummy!) that looks so much better. I understand the asthetics of a dual exhaust, but personally, I just seem to think that unless you have a V configured engine, dual exhausts are pointless.

Maybe its the ricer in me that likes the offset muffler look I see on all the big power Supras and Skylines and FC/FDs.

I think the look can be very nice. A dual exhaust system could be a great cosmetic addition if a bit spendy.

I love the NSRT-4! Very fun car to drive with a very different personality than our beloved MS3. I'm glad they stopped making them or I would've had a hard time deciding between the two. MS3 would have won over all but if I had the extra cash, I would have an SRT-4 as well.

On yeah.... I forgot about that... (lol2)

The CX-7 as well. Now, I don't know if it is a true dual exhaust from the turbo back, but mostly it is just from the muffler back or if it even provides better performance, but it does look good though. (yes)

^ "flow quality????" What the H is THAT?

I call BS.

I think he's talking about losing velocity from an oversized pipe, or in this case, dual oversized pipes.
You know, the pipes are so big the exhaust gasses get lost and kind of wander around aimlessly instead of getting the hell out.
Seriously, I think the velocity thing only really applies in n/a engines because you need to keep the exhaust gasses flowing fast to help scavenge the cylinders, but I don't see that having much if any effect on a turbo motor. Again, I have been wrong before.
