Exhaust Question?

Has anyone actually purchased any of the cheap exhausts listed on Ebay? I'm not that concerned about performance, I'm mostly interested in getting a deep mellow sounding muffler.

I know this question has been posted before, but I wanted to know if anyone actually bought one and if they could give any feedback, i.e., sound, quality, fit, etc.?

Appreciate your comments,

most ppl bought just muffler from ebay and have shop to do custom cat back system.
but you can try for us. :)

just buy a cheap good looking muffler and it will give u the sound your looking for

Would you advise getting one with a silencer? If so, do most silencers give you the same sound as the stock or is it still a bit louder? Just curious.

with the silencer in it is very hard to hear the muffler. with the silencer out it sounds like any open muffler

be aware of what you're buying...the problem with cheap mufflers is that the sound absorbing fibreglass inside of the muffler is almost just glued in (not that bad, but you get my drift). anyway, after 6 months it is all but gone...straight out the ass of the muffler!!! i was told by a few exhaust places the internals need to be secured (so to speak) by stainless steel mesh etc.

i just wish the ppl on ebay would return my emails when i ask them technical questions like what's inside the muffler etc. i asked one knob how big is the core and he replies "it's a 2.5" inlet". yeah good on ya w@nker.

but but but, if you can find a muffler on ebay (like the apexi style) which is very good quality, pls let me know.

Just get an HKS axle-back exhaust :D That's what I have and it's awsome.

but did you know that flow tests between cheap assed and the most expensive muffler are almost identical??? the only difference is sound, style and a badge.

you got to look at it this way, muffler in the end is a part of the exhaust system, the muffler part is actually a secondary resonator for most of the imported vehicle.

it's all the piping and two of the resonator that gonna makes a different, not just the muffler part itself.

correct me if I am wrong, are you saying that a 2.25-2.5 inch diameter exhaust piping with two quality low restrictive resonator gonna be the same as OEM 1.75 inch piping with one stock restrictive resonator and a bling bling muffler? properly not.

some of the exhaust system in the market is over priced. again, I am just being general since i dont even have a mazda. a greddy, apexi, tanable catback cost around 450 new.

what you get from them is warranty, garrentee tone, SMOG legal sticker, stianless steel piping(most of them, or aluminumized steel) that would rust, mandrel bent and quality resonator(not glued glasspack type).

again there's pro and con.

if performance isnt the pirority, ebay knock off might just be the answer for you. just go to a good welder and dont let them put your exhaust pointind down the ground like 99 percent of ricer got.

and there the routh i took, custom pipe with matching resonator and muffler.
I am running a 2.5 inch pipe, 22inch resonator and apex'i RS muffler.
all welded for about 250 dollar.
aluminized steel pipe so it would rust(there's no salt in socal anyway) but for the trade off, i dont have the smog sticker.

I know a guy that custom bent mandrel piping and see the whole system like that, for a very good price.

if the noise is kinda getting out of hand, invest in a quality low restrictive resonator, those bolt on silienter would almost kill all the gain on the exhaust mod.

sorry, should have clarrified - core size being equal flow figures between an ebay knockoff and say apexi are pretty much the same.

power is not gained solely from the muffler. yes if you replace the stock muffler with a straight through you will get power, but from less restriction. if i were to set up an exhaust 2.5" mandrel bent all the way and tried every muffler on the market at the rear which has a 2.5" core, power would all be within 0.5whp of each other

I am agree with you on this one but this would just leave us back where we started.

cost/brand Vs. quality

:)

yup!

that's why i'm trying to find a cheap one on ebay which has decent internals (most important part really)...something that'll last

and speaking from personal experience, apex'i do make some quality stuff. I been to apex'i headquarter or garage(that's what they called it) and i kinda play around with their stuff a bit. I am sold.
not just for the brand name(i dont really care btw) but their quality and completeiness.

beside RS exhaust i also have a apexi VAFC(piggy back computer that for Vtec honda) but it's what i use as fuel management for my turbo honda

look in ebay and look for "bomz" or "bomz racing" they got one of the best built universal exhaust in ebay.

i ran one of the N1 looking back in the old N/A day.

and one of my boy have one on his lude.
it still sounds the same like the day the muffler "break in"

or if you want to spend a little more...mangaflow is pretty damn good for the money.

Is it just me, or do those silencers look retarded? You'd think they'd at least try to hide the thing in there so you didn't see the little 1" exhaust outlet hanging out the back.

I vote (rice).
