exhaust question

I am getting a custom 3" exhaust made and put on next weekend. I am keeping the cat for now, but erasing the resonator. I need to choose a muffler. I am leaning with a magnaflow , but i dont know what size i should go with.
I am looking for almost a subaru sound.

( I understand he did a dp, and cat delete, but i was told i could still get a sound like that)

any info would be greatly appreciated.

the biggest difference you can do in the exhaust system is changing the dp - as for the rest definitely keep a 1 of your 2 cats in there - no cats sounds really cool but when they are both gone it's only a matter of time before your turbo's oil seals start to leak - your dp has a cat in it and so does your mid-pipe - if you keeping your stock dp i'd go straight pipe all the way back to a universal hks, borla, or apexi muffler - most of those would give a nice sound - if you decide to get a dp later you can get a cpe unit that replaces the dp and mid pipe and still retains a cat

so i should take the mid pipe cat out, and id be fine? worried with inspection, and reliability. as for the hks, borla, etc. i was told that there mufflers wernt going to give me the "subaru sound" i was looking for. in your opinion will they?

you should be ok w 1 cat - honestly cobb is a big subi tuner so if you were goin for subi sound - but they dont sell just a muffler - you would have to get a cbe from them (while they are left)

the DISI motor is what sounds like a boxster engine. so no matter what exhaust you get it will sound like a WRX. it just comes down to what type of tone you want.

LOW pitched, higher pitched, inbetween. smoother tone(stock exhaust with resonators cut out tp or no TP sounds like a WRX mixed with the smoothness of the EVO)

HKS CBE has a pretty very deep tone to it.

but the corksports exhaust pieces have their own unique and amazing sound quality to them.

im sticking with CS for the DP to go with the TP. and will either go with the CS CBE or the HKS. the HKS combined with the CS DP/TP i imgaine will sounds monsterous

i like the way the HKS CBE looks(4.5 inch tip on the can) so i may go with that

I guess you are going for sound with the CBE part of your mods. The only power gains you will get will be with the DP/RP and those two low flow stock cats.

Best power mod for the buck is the DP/RP upgrade with or without cats, connected to the stock CBE. Saves a lot of money and produces big gain. The stock CBE flows extremely well. I mean better than the flow rate of the exhaust side of the K04 turbo.

You can always mod your CBE later to change the sound the way you want. Or if you want to play with sound now, that's great. Get the sound you want, but don't expect a power gain, because the restrictions are upstream of the CBE.

You can get a little gain by replacing the stock second cat section with a straight through race pipe and no cat and still be legal, but its the combo of three inch DP/RP catless or with high flow cats that will make the other guys get smaller in your rear view mirror. Just one opinion on best use of hard earned bucks.

Oh, and with respect to a good guy with whom I just happen to disagree on this one point, catless DP/RP combo does not, in my experience, cause turbo seal premature leaking. It may contribute to some visible "smoke" under certain circumstances, but that's engine crankcase blow by fumes coming out of the PCV system which goes back into the intake, gets partially burned and then there are no cats to finish off the burn. Oil catch can helps there.

I'm not to concerned with adding any more HP. The CBE is definitely not a power mod using it with the stock DP/MP. I had a TurboXS stealth kit (DP/RP) SRI, TIP, Forge BPV, stock CBE for a while. So I've been there with the big power gain and some of the inherent problems that come with it. I didn't want to spend anymore $$$ on the car to get it running right. I'm very happy how my car is performing right now with the current mods. I am going to concentrate on some suspension work and wheels next, and yea the "sound" of the CS CBE is sweet. I live in CA. a state that has very strict and specific laws towards tampering with cat's at all. Too many people out here have gotten big fines after being pulled over and ticketed for emissions illegal parts. Running a testpipe/racepipe in CA. is illegal. People think that they can just buy a DP set up that has an aftermarket hi-flow cat and that they're legal, not true. To the OP sounds like you have some specific ideas for what you want to do. Just giving another option to look at...

Edit: Just wanted to add I definitely miss the extra power the DP/RP produces, I agree with MSMS3. For the money spent to power gains, if this is where you want to go, is $$$ well spent. For me personally, I am concerned about all the CO2's where putting into the atmosphere. Not going to bore anyone with my politics, but that was just another of the several reasons I had for getting rid of my catless DP/RP set-up.

Just delete the second cat replace with a testpipe, delete both resonators and replace with straight pipe and leave stock dp and baby muffler. You will be amazed how good it sounds!!! Sounds similar to WRX but with more cock and balls in my opinion. And its fairly cheap! ($250) Don't waste money on a aftermarket CBE or muffler
-my 2 cents

Yep it does... As far as a waste of money, nah. It's a preference. That's what makes modding so personal. We don't all want the same things out of our cars.
