Hey I was wandering if any of you guys no what size bolts hold the exhaust manifold to the block. I had the symptoms of an exhaust leak so i took off my heat sheild to realize the bolt all the way to the left on the bottom had the head broken off so it is no longer holding tight in that corner. Thanks

The bottom far left bolt on mine was missing completely, the upper far left bolt popped its head because it was taking all the stress.
They are 8mm x1.25 pitch(not positive could be 1.5) x 40mm long, but you should go with high strength bolts.
The bolt next to the far bottom left broke when I was trying to replace them all with new ones.
Drilled a pilot hole and tried using an extractor, but it broke off.
Now I'm F@$KED and can't drill it out b/c of the hardened extractor.

Anybody have any ideas what I can do next?

i am missing my upper left hand bolt on my header and I have no leaks.........i busted bolt off as i was installing my wagner header and never worried about it. i used some header gasket sealer stuff as a precaution.........been fine for the past 20K!

i forget the bolt sizes bbut they are on some header thread i think!

this was on my P5 though.

I have a slight leak in my MSP exhaust manifold. My bottom left bolt is completely missing and the other manifold bolts I could tighten by hand. how the heck do you get to the bolts in the bottom row tightened? I had a really hard time even getting a wrench on there!

Code:
X [COLOR=Red]X[/COLOR] [COLOR=Red]X[/COLOR] X

Try and pick the extractor out. get a small drill bit and drill around it. or get some titanium bits and drill at it.

Definitely fix these bolts and leaks. They are one source of the many reasons your car doesn't run right.

There is a socket looking piece I used. Instead of having to drill and tap, You just tap this *socket* (E-Z Out) onto the broken stud then thread out. It really helps to soak all the bolts with pb blaster b4 taking anything off.

i have taken my manifold out many times and the only way to tighten the botom ones is using a 12mm wrench and going from the bottom of the manifold. donot get under the car just go thriugh the left side of the mani and with one hand hold the wrench and with the other one guide it. its really simple.

Thanks for the tip, i will try it out tonight or tomorrow. I have to go to Autozone and get some manifold bolts. It was posted that M8x1.25 bolts should work... I hope they do! I know they sell Grade 10.9 metric hex bolts at Autozone (i picked some up for another fix a while ago).

I used a combination wrench to get to the bottom fastners. Put two together to hand torque them. Definitely soak them with liquid wrench or similar prior to attempting to remove the fastners.

thanks good tip as well.

i bought some high temp thread lock. hopefully the new bolts won't vibrate out again.

Word. I have been going for a while now with the same bolt broken off in the head. No leaks yet. Broke it off when I installed my header. Didnt think to fix it when I converted to a turbo.

make sure you double check after your first drive. I had one or 2 somewhat loose after replacing a broken bolt.
