I live in Bristol, and the cops around here are notorious for writing noise tickets, I was wanting to know, what will pass for legal in VA as far as exhausts go.

Technically, they can't give you a ticket for exhaust. If they do, you can fight it in court. Check out the Sema Action Network, they pretty much fight against laws that affect the modification of your vehicle.

Yup, if your into modifying your car, you should now about that site. Lots of good info on there

true, true. But if i could be sneaky about it, i might get away with it.

You can always throw on a mazdaspeed axleback and claim it's a factory exhaust when or if they pull you over.

I have a Vibrant 3in. "turbo-back" and I haven't had any problems yet...

I've only had it for about 2 and a half months though so who knows. We do get away with a little more in the 757 area...

anyone know why?

I'll look up the exact statute in the Virginia Code for you in the morning and post it here in this thread.

technically in VA any modification to your exhaust is illegal...

sh!t sucks, just do wat i do, tell the judge you ran over a shuvel or something and you had an exhaust leak because of it lol :)

I have the Sport exhaust on my p5.. got stopped 2 times for it in Arlington. I just tell them it is factory.. says Mazdaspeed right on it. :D

Hey Lisa!

Are they only targeting those with VA plates? I'm in Va all the time and I haven't been pulled over once for exhaust (and mine is very loud).

I'm sure they won't mess with you but technically if your in the state of VA you play by their rules

im not sure.. you have MD plates.. so you might be ok. :)

I saw an EVO pulled over this morning on 66 and the cop was pointing at the aftermarket exhaust on it...looked like the owner wasn't too happy.

Hooray for MD...VA is too expensive for me to live in anyway :)

Lasagne....

Anything non-factory is considered illegal. Note that "good working order" and "excessive or unusual levels of noise" is just vague enough to make any cop an exhaust pro. Compound that with the fact they don't have to measure db and will give zero consideration for CARB exemption and you can just about guarantee you get a ticket for that shiny thing under the rear.

FFXCPD and Commonwealth Troopers are notorious for these BS tickets.

46.2-1049. Exhaust system in good working order.
No person shall drive and no owner of a vehicle shall permit or allow the operation of any such vehicle on a highway unless it is equipped with an exhaust system in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual levels of noise; provided however, that for motor vehicles, such exhaust system shall be of a type installed as standard factory equipment, or comparable to that designed for use on the particular vehicle as standard factory equipment. An exhaust system shall not be deemed to prevent excessive or unusual noise if it permits the escape of noise in excess of that permitted by the standard factory equipment exhaust system of private passenger motor vehicles or trucks of standard make.
The term "exhaust system," as used in this section, means all the parts of a vehicle through which the exhaust passes after leaving the engine block, including mufflers and other sound dissipative devices.
Chambered pipes are not an effective muffling device to prevent excessive or unusual noise, and any vehicle equipped with chambered pipes shall be deemed in violation of this section.

When I had the Protg, I was stopped twice because of my Corksport. Both time I was told the same thing that has been mentioned above "Anything aftermarket in the state of VA is illegal". Luckily they never cited me for it, just informed me that I would need to remove and replace it.
