hey guys Im just curious if this is normal for the msp. . .
my engine seems louder then most cars. . like even at just an idle i think maybe its the valves???? are they normally semi loud? please help

They have a decent rumble to them, but nothing too outrageous...what kind of sound do you mean? Are you all stock?

ya pretty much. . . I just hear "tick tick tick" all the time like goin up and down but its semi loud. . .

i have the same problem...and a slight squeal that generates from one of the pulleys.....the guy at mazda says that if sand gets into the belt it eventually turns into glass? I dont know....i need to get new belts soon anyway.....

so is the "tick tick tick" sound normal? it seems kinda loud to be normal?. . . .

The valve ticking is normal and louder than most cars, just the way our cars are.

The belt squeel could be just a tiny bit of slack in the tensioner, tighten it up just a little to see if that resolves the squeel, and make sure it is goodntight when you change to new belts or you will have a louder squeel.

alright guys thanks for your help! Just makin sure my car isnt gonna go tick tick tick boom! lol

Every Protege I have been around has it, the MSP, P5, MP3, ES, LX, DS, and even my '97 626 had it (same engine). I think everybody has wondered if it was normal and the group of guys I hang around and I are always working on ours cars so we have just chalked it up to being a normal sound, never had any issues because of it.

I dunno about the sand turning to glass thing. I blow glass and I don't think that those belts get up to 1200 or so degrees for that sand to melt into glass.

yeah, I read that and was thinking that was the first time I ever heard that, but most ill-informed mechanics try to pull info out of their ass anyways

Haha yeah i was kinda worried about the sound as well.. I just bought a MSP and i heard that ticking and i was used to my first gen eclipse where there was nothing but the rumble of the exhaust. One thing thats amazing, i love the MSP more then anything !
