Engine Management..What to do?

Ok, I've decided that i'm going w/ cams for my next purchase then i'm going to get some engine management.
What does everyone recommend.
I just had a talk w/ a guy at a local performance shop and he recommends a safc II. but i'm not crazy about that idea.

Anyone have any input?
btw- for now i'll be at stock boost and try to get 200whp once i hit that i will up the boost.

SAFC II will not work. A few local shops near me tried it with no luck, and a few people on this forum tried it with no luck.

If you plan to build one day and do some serious modding - MPI
If you plan to just do bolt-ons and up the boost a bit - AFC

Really, if you have the money, the MPI is nice because it controls timing.... but if your wallet is tight and you really don't need timing control... the AFC is a great deal. After install, the change was more than I really have noticed with any other mods, and it was one of the cheaper mods as well.

If there was a ratio called : noticable difference / cost NDC ratio ;) the Airflow Logistics AFC would be a high NDC.

I will say some of the highest WHP cars have the MPI though.... so its all about your needs.

a big 1.7hp gain at stock boost. well..umm.. (ugh)
well i want to hit the 200 mark w/ a boost controller, but actually that wouldnt'd be a bad purchase. can i hook it up to a laptop and tune it while i drive or at least watch my a/f ratio?

i really dont know how much i'm going to build it up. for now my plans are
cams.
ported intake manifold
ported throttle body
Jspec flywheel
mam exhaust manifold
and possibly the mam head (if i decide to stay at home and not move out)
some audio crap

It is never about max HP gain when talking about engine management.... and you rarely see vendors say "buy my tuner, it adds 50whp!!". Its about maintaining a smooth and appropriate A/F ratio, and leveling out the curve. I prob gained like 5-10 whp, but my car pulls much harder, gives me smoother shifts, and maintains a good A/F. After I shift and hit the gas, the power is right there... I pull through the RPMS much faster.

To get accurate A/F I think you need an O2 gauge added to exaust no matter what. I know there is a 'record' function on the AFC, which I think will plot certain values for you.... but I have never used it.

well since u put it like that and it will smooth out the entire powerband then i'm deff in. i had the flash and it still feels like it's holding back around 3700 - 3900rpm.

how does the unichip compare to the both of these?
also what boost are u running at? and will i hit fuel cut if i throw this on along w/ the cams?

yeah i sent a pm but i have a feeling that he doesn't read the boards that much. and i think his web page is down too

I wish I could get dsm's afc, but I keep sending him pm's, with no reply.

same... his number is floating around somewhere, so i'll call him when i'm ready to buy an AFC

And what's FTC?

Fuel Timing Controller.

Im looking at both the split second afc, and mpi tuner right now. Both seem really good, but I cant decide because I dont know my future plans for the car.

I would really have to suggest the MPI. It is a great unit, no matter what modifications you do, you can get the most hp out of them. If you have any problems, chances are someone has already had them and everybody is willing to share info.

Paul, pm or call me if you are interested in engine management before making a decision either way.

John @ Airflow Logistics (AFC) - 813-679-7753 , I always got my cell phone near!

grr seems once again I'm having problems with my pm box.....best way to guarantee getting ahold of me is to either email me, john@airflowlogistics or sales@airflowlogistics or give me a call. as far as engine management choices my personal opinion is that is depends on what you plan on doing with the car. If you plan on sticking with the stock turbo and stock internals I would have to say that our AFC is the best bang for the buck...if you are planning on upgrading turbos and internals I would suggest going with a full piggy back system such as the MPI, Haltech, or our FTC. All are great products, I've had direct experience with ours, hehe well i guess thats a given, and the Haltech and I've heard/seen great results with the MPI. I would not suggest the greddy emanage, while i think this is a good product, its fairly complicated to use, especially for a person new to tuning, and requires a lot of additional parts to have full control....

NOT INTENDING TO THREADJACK HERE,

But does anyone know if the AEM unit has been tried and if so, is it ready for puchase/use....

I'm searching for a total replacement of the ECU. I have MEGA plans in store for this car, starting early next year....
