thanks guys!

i don't think it matters which way the damper faces but I could be wrong. I don't have mine yet as I have to wait for the newly designed bracket to come out but I sure as hell hope this thing fits right. Like you, I would be upset if I had to grind down on a weld that holds the thing together.

Bump for more pics of how it actually mounts.

I'm curious, does it get mounted under both bolts, or only the front bolt and then it sort of just sits on top of the rear bolt that the ground wire goes. Anyway, anything will help.

^^^ i think it sits on top of the rear bolt, but ill figure it out this afternoon. ill try and post pics asap :)

bracket and washers installed

3 washers added to the circled stud and the rear stud as well (not circled)

Damper-03.JPG

that is where the "L" bracket is hitting the motor mount... in that corner

Damper-04.JPG

there is the reason it doesnt fit, bad welding. idk why it couldnt be welded on the inner part of the bracket instead of the outter part. i have to sand/grind that part down

Damper-05.JPG

larger view of the "L" bracket and what part of the bracket hits the engine mount. weld needs to be sanded/grinded down

what it should look like installed.

Is this damper used in place of replacing the motor mounts or used in conjunction with the mounts

that's why i'm going with it. I actually use to have the front AWR mount and i still got wheel hop, so hell might as well try this.

make sure you take some nice pics and post your review of it.

Weapon-R Engine Damper Installation and Comments

Hi Guys:

I installed the Weapon-R engine damper this afternoon. I purchased the product via Horsepower Freaks' group buy and it arrived amazingly fast. Two thumbs up for great service by Ben!

You will need 10mm, 14mm, and 17mm sockets, a large allen wrench for the Weapon-R damper, and 17mm deep socket for the side engine mount bolts, along with a 6 (or more) inch extension bar for your ratchet.

The instructions contain three pictures, which, frankly, are just okay. L8R's pictures, on the other hand, are very nice. The instructions are similarly just okay, as I found several steps unnecessary and two important steps omitted. Let me explain.

(a) Steps 13 of the instructions can be omitted. They pertain to jacking up the car, using jack stands, and using the jack to put some pressure on the oil pan. I skipped all these steps without consequences.

(b) Begin with step 4, to wit, removing the OEM strut bar and passenger side OEM strut bar mounting bracket. Place the Weapon-R strut tower mounting bracket underneath the OEM strut bar mounting bracket, as instructed in step 5. What the instuctions fail to note is that you must cut the appendage off the OEM strut bar mounting bracket in order for the Weapon-R bracket to fit. The appendage to cut off the OEM strut bar mounting bracket points verticlly down and has a bolt affixed to it that is not used on the MSP. I used a hack saw to cut the appendage and a file to smooth the edges. It is obvious what to cut once you have the OEM strut bar mounting bracket off, or if you go to install the OEM strut bar mounting bracket over the Weapon-R piece.

(c) Use the 17mm deep socket to remove two of the passenger side engine mounting boltsone from the front position and one from the rear position. The rear-most position of the side engine mount has two boltsyou only remove the top one, not both. The instructions are not clear on this point. The L-bracket then should fit like a glovemine did.

(d) The damper itself installs per the instructions. I had to increase its length to make it fit between the two mounting brackets properly. You do this by rotating the body of the damper (or piston) clockwise and then tightening the bolt against the piston to fix its position.

I think I will go take a spin right now and report back shortly with my impressions.

Just found out about this... i am running all the mounts (front rear tranny) but i didnt know about this recent mount... subb'n for your impressions!

Initial Impressions

Well, my initial impressions are favorable. Note that all I have is a filled front OEM engine mount in addition to the Weapon-R engine damper. It was dark and the police were out, so I was reasonably conservative. Nonetheless, the damper seemed to quell the lashing that was present with just the filled front mount when I agressively jumped on and off the accelerator. The best part, at least for me, was that the vibrations at idle were no more than what I had with just the filled mount. I will have to wait for a track day to fully judge if wheel hop is eliminated.

So far so good.

2K - im using this for more of an apperance mod, but i heard this is supposed to be just as good as adding motor mounts, i could be wrong. im not expecting any miracle from this either lol

Professor - thanks for your write up!

yes, i didnt jack my car up also.

i was curious to know about the motor mount and the two bolts, but u answered that question.

im glad yours fit! i have to drill bigger holes on the L bracket to fit onto the mount and dremel the welding on the bracket... so gay

i think ill work on this tomorrow and post final pics :)

peace

lol... wow. that didnt take long. i was wondering about the build quality on these tings because weapon r is typically known to be kinda crappy.

okay... i took the damper apart. u would think it would be like a gas filled shock or something... boy was i wrong

idk how the **** this is supposed to help in a good way. u might as well weld a metal pipe to keep the motor from moving. the damper piece has no play once so ever. its just a stiff piece

Damper-07.JPG

taken apart

the piece itself

inside the bottom?! wth is that

same

pushing down on the top, no pressure

Damper-14.JPG

releasing the top. is it supposed to pop back up??

Damper-15.JPG

if i didnt sand the piece down, i wouldnt be able to put the rear bolt back on!
Damper-16.JPG

close up. how dangerous is that?

Damper-17.JPG

how off the damper is from matching the hole

Damper-18.JPG

Damper-19.JPG

how much i grinded it down

Damper-20.JPG

i installed it and im waiting for it to break...

idk if im over reacting, but man, i didnt know this kit was this crappy, or is it supposed to be like this?? i thought it was an actual shock that u could press down on (like a hood prop kit or suspension) or is it supposed to be this easy to take apart?

comments please! who has this kit?

there are two weapon R group buys going on.

shipped to hawaii was about $170........... that's with a discount too

I'm not sure about these dampers, but the SHO had stock ones that were similar to shocks and were gas filled. Solid ones were available as an upgrade, but IIRC the brackets were known to break unless you had some strong motor mounts, which defeated the purpose of the solid damper unless you were the one guy with a Turbo SHO. On top of that, if you did the dampers aka Torque limiters, it supposedly put a lot of extra stress on the strut towers. I would stay away from solid dampers in general. I'll admit they do look pretty good though.

errk.. okay i thought i was the only persont hat had this problem.. i had to grind the mount as well.. and also i had to bend it a little to make it fit. i'm afraid it'll break. the wielding job on it sucks and the worst thing is that it mount on the strut tower doesn't fit because i have cruise control so if i cut that appendage off the cruise control unit will be hanging off. is the Bracket on the motor mount suppose to be straight? i'll probably get this braket reinforced with some new welds and more metal.

we should start a new thread and have weapon R make us new brackets. not just one, but both, better, stronger, and nicer welding. i took the Weapon R sticker off of the damper
