Hi GUys I'm planning on buying a new CX-5 this weekend and then planning on loading it up with weight and driving 3,000 miles with it across the country soon after. What is your recommended break in period, speed etc.?

This is going to be my first new car so I want to treat her nice.

From CX-5 Owners' Manual:
No special break-in is necessary, but a few
precautions in the first 1,000 km (600
miles) may add to the performance,
economy, and life of your Mazda.
l Do not race the engine.
l Do not maintain one constant speed,
either slow or fast, for a long period of
time.
l Do not drive constantly at full-throttle
or high engine rpm for extended
periods of time.
l Avoid unnecessary hard stops.
l Avoid full-throttle starts.
l Do not tow a trailer.

I agree with paris1. I travel the first 1,000 miles around 55 MPH + or - 5 MPH and then change the engine oil and filter. Most engine makers recommend heavy duty premium oil for the first 1,000 to 3,000 miles and then change to synthetic, but Mazda puts in synthetic at the factory. Synthetic oil doesn't seat the rings to the cylinder walls as well as the non-synthetic premium oils do so they will pass more oil and take longer to break-in.

Owners manual page 3-45 says:
"Do not tow a trailer during the first 1,000 km (600 miles) of your new Mazda. If you do, you may damage the engine, transaxle, differential, wheel bearings, and other power train components."

Since you "want to treat her nice" don't do the trip in the new CX5 and rent a vehicle. Ed
