Engagement rings?

How does this whole ring thing work? I know the "traditional" way of doing it. Also the whole 3 ring thing too. I was thinking of getting amy a "nice" ring for now then later on getting her a really nice one when I can really afford it. I could technically get her a really nice one first, but I don't think it's the smartest thing to do (financially). So is this whole get a ring then upgrade it to something nicer a normal thing? She said that's what her mom did. Oh, she knows about the whole engagement thing already so her reading this is ok lol.

afaik you get the engagement ring, something really nice, then the wedding bands are somewhat plain, they can still be high quality bands, but usually they are fairly plain looking and simpler so the engagement ring is the best looking and usually most expensive

i was thinking of getting one for a few hundred..then later on blowing a few grand on a good one. Wedding bands are simple and pretty cheap, not too worried about that. She said she's ok with a twist tie for a ring :) but i'd feel bad if I got her something cheap.

doesn't she post on these boards? (me huddles with b_tapper, Vulcanon, and shawnthemonster)

I tried giving my girl a keyring the other day and she said it was too big. I think she was just trying to spare my feelings though:D I wonder if I could get it sized??
I always thought a plain band with a nice diamond on it was better for an engagement ring, and the real money was supposed to be spent on the wedding ring...Am I backwards, or does it even make a difference?? My parents were divorced long before I cared to ask what the difference was...

Her real engagement ring is going to be a 1 carat princess cut solitaire on a platnium band

the one I'll get now will be a lot cheaper, then I'll upgrade to the above.

The wedding band is just a simple band

Why don't you ask her mom for her engagement ring to give Amy? She may be flattered, the whole family heirloom thing.

Britt

never thought of that
she doesn't know yet, was going to wait until xmas time for that part.

if you're worried about money, then a white gold setting might be better. platinum will almost double the cost of the ring. although it's harder than gold, platinum scratches more easily. some engagement rings have matching wedding bands. i wanted something unique so i got an antique ring. now the quest for a matching wedding band has started and if we can't find a wedding band that matches, we'll either have one custom made or just get a plain band.

My mom got an engagement ring & then a wedding ring, but the way my dad planned it out, the 2 of them fit together. She had them combined into 1 ring, which looks really cool & is totally unique. It also makes it easy to wear both without having to worry about 2 separate rings.

If you want to pick one up pretty cheap, I'm selling one on Ebay.

It is .70 Carat, an I1 clarity, and H color. It is a basic 14K yellow gold band. It also has the certification card. Things did not work out with the girl I purchased it for because I was young and dumb. So before I get engaged again, I want to get rid of it. I paid $1900 for it new.

Having married recently (July) I would say shop around as much as possible, you might end up w/a great deal. We went to several jewelers - Littman's, Kays, Bailey Banks & Biddle, and some small independent stores. When is your wedding? If it's in wedding season (May, June, July) ALL the jewelers have great sales. We got my set for $700 from Littman's:

It's 1 carat total, originally $1800 but on sale for $1000, plus I traded in a ring worth $300 which brought it down to $700. We got my husband's set from Royal Jewelers (I'm not sure if they're a chain) for $700 as well. He has two rings, one titanium which he wears to work (he's an auto tech) and one white gold w/hand braided inlay and 3 accent diamonds to wear on the weekends or when we go out. The thing about the smaller places is they will sometimes haggle w/you. The titanium was regularly $150 but to get our business he tossed it in as a freebie. I wish we'd went there for my ring! But we certainly wouldn't have been able to get as good of a deal.

As far as upgrading, I realize the diamonds in my ring are not the best, but that doesn't matter to me now. My hubby's convinced I'd upgrade in a couple years but I love my set. I'd upgrade the quality of the diamonds, but not the setting. If I got a completely different setting the sentiment wouldn't be the same to me. That may be something you might want to consider as well, because the setting will cost much less than the stone. Try looking into a ring that may not have the highest quality diamond but a beautiful setting that she will love, then upgrade the stones later. Sorry so long, just been there! :D

Well; Here's one for ya! My wife's boss just proposed to his girlfriend; she accepted, and she got a 3+ carat Solitare in a simple antique Platinum setting. The cost? $45,000!! It retailed for close to $60,000, but he deals with this jeweler often, and got a deal. Uh huh! This is the guy with the Mercedes Benz CL600 Twin Turbo Coupe.

Must be nice to be able to afford a rock like that. But then again, who wants to be the bearer of the bad news if that thing gets lost. I hope that ring is glued on her finger!!!!

I personally bought the best ring I could. (even sacrificed some car parts for it). The most important thing though was to find out what your fiancee will like...remember the three C's (cut, clarity, color). All these will affect the price.

I always recommend shopping beforehand and even the both of you to go look. There's nothing worst than getting something you all won't be happy with.

Look into options to even financing it if it's slightly out of your budget.

I decided to wait and save before getting Jamie's ring. I shopped around a lot and got a great deal, paid about $4,000 less than the ring was appraised at. I also bought the stone and setting seperate, but from the same jeweler.

I thought about going with the cheaper ring first, but all the girls at work were getting engaged and everyone wanted to see their rings. It seemed like such a big deal to them that I didn't want to risk my fianc feeling embarrased or anything when people asked to see hers. It took me 1.5 years longer than I wanted to save the money, but when I remember the look on her face when she said yes it all seems worth it.

I would also go with white gold over platinum. I got platinum for hers and it does dull and bend easier than 10-14kt white gold, but looks exactly the same. My wedding band is in white gold and when the two are side by side you can't even tell a dfference.
