Emission treatment from dealer

:
CX-5, fwd auto
Hi,

I went to my oil change at the dealer and being told on next service to do an emission treatment to clean engine valve deposit at $150.

Reading this forum, skyactiv engine high temperature reduce this buildup. Am I correct in saying this service would not help my engine?

I was asking about transmission drain and fill and they said Mazda does not recommend and can't even give me the pricing. But I rather use $150 for automatic transmission service.

Any input will be great.
Thanks

I don't know what your dealer is talking about. Does the owners manual say that you need it at your mileage? Sounds like a way for the stealer -er- dealer to take money away from you. Probably some liquid fuel injector cleaner that the owners manual says not to use. I have seen dealers try to sell services that the owners manual lists as harmful. You should always question extra service. You did well to ask here.

I believe this is totally not needed nor is it in the Mazda factory maintenance to-to list. SKIP this service. Ed

Why does the dealer think your engine has needs this service. Was compression at a specific cylinder off? Carbon in the engine can be measured. I suspect the dealer is just trying to make money on made up maintenance. I would not trust this shop and if it was me, I wouldn't return to a place that I can't trust anymore.

I think most modern engines burn off excess carbon.

What year is your CX-5 and how many miles on it? I'd ask the dealer how do they clean the engine valve deposit? If they don't take your cylinder head off to clean them but using fuel injector cleaner, they are talking the BS as our SA-G is direct injection and fuel injector cleaner simply can't reach the valves.

My dealer wants to sell me injector cleaner and tire rotation and other stuff at oil changes. I walked in with the manual showing that Mazda warns not to use any fuel additives. I now have my oil changed locally and save the receipt for warranty. Dealers are like TV commercials. they both try to sell me stuff I don't need or want, and they both annoy me. I try to avoid them.

Carbon build up on the intake valves is an issue with direct injection engines as the fuel doesn't go over the intake valves anymore like in traditional fuel injected engines.

Not saying that you need this service, just putting the facts out there. As mentioned, if you do get this service, make sure they are just not using some injector cleaner as that will not work.

Also, if they refusing to do the drain and fill on the transmission I would be looking for a new service shop. I personally prefer quality, independent shops over dealerships...but to each their own.

Yea i asked my dealer if they actually take the intake manifold off and clean the valves. They could not give me a straight answer. So I just bought a $10 gdi valve cleaner and added in to the line on the intake for now.

Thanks for replies. My car is 2013 but have only 30000 miles with no problem. The dealer said that its like chemical cleaning, so they will not take valve covers out. I wondered if anyone has done so, as well as for skyactiv is this effective for cleaning carbon?
Looks like dealer make money service, thank you

I did it for $10 of cleaner, it's worked for others. I didn't take the manifold off to inspect the valve because there is a PITA bolt that's below the fold you have to remove. In hindsight, I could probably easily have removed it while I had the front undercover off. I wouldn't pay for a service like that without actually seeing the valve myself first.

Owners manual does not recommend adding any additives but till date I have not ANYONE suffering from ANY problems but only gains however small by dropping a 12 oz or 20 oz of Techron in the gas tank. This new Skyactiv engines - dunno. Personally - I would NOT do it.

Sounds like a money maker... Especially since you asked to do a preventative maintenance on the transmission, you got the BULL$EYE placed on you.

Even though the transmission has "LIFETIME FLUID", I would wait a while longer (maybe 60k) on this transmission before thinking about a drain/refill with the MAZDA fluid, unless you are doing towing.

Like everyone has mentioned, the dealer is trying to sell you a service that is not required. There is a way to clean the valves without removing the head, but it involves removing the whole intake manifold. As for fuel cleaners, I do not see what harms a cleaner would cause to the system. On my last tank, I added a bottle of Techron to the tank and have not noticed any negative side effects.

Hi,

Any shop who recommended a $150 "emission treatment" to my CX-5 would be treated to some choice toxic emissions from my mouth. They might have to call the EPA.

Thanks again everyone. I will skip all together. Also I will wait little longer before changing transmission.
