EDM/MSF brakes

good god, 77k?! I have 68k and I've changed my brake fluid 5 times already!

I know I feel terrible about it.. I do all the other work on my car, from cams to bolt ons to electrical, etc. I've changed my gear oil at least 5 times, but it's sooo much easier than doing the brake fluid. I don't have speedbleeders or those "one man bleeding kits". My roommate and I are going to buy the stuff so we can do both of our cars. Then it's on to replacing my factory original power steering fluid :P

I'll have to search and see if there is a how-to on the power steering fluid.. never hear anyone talking about it.

I understand the pads acting weird because of the rust it has to eat off.. but it's kinda.. extreme. I never notice it being that bad on any other cars that I detail.

I don't have any of that fancy s*** and my brakes have been bled just fine

stop making excuses and get that s*** done!

giterdone!

still wanna look at a how-to.. otherwise I'd just open up all the bleeders, drain ze fluid, close the bleeders, and fill ze fluid.. just like I do for oil changes.. and I'm sure that's not what you're supposed to do with the brakes because of the whole "air in the lines" crap and it being a sealed system. It just seems like something that would be a lot easier with another person helping, I'll probably have my roommate help me work on it when my clutch is being installed this week. Someone from a local car forum is coming over to help me install the clutch because I've never had to remove my tranny before.. not really looking forward to it but he's done a handful of Mazdas before so it shouldn't be a biggie.

back to the MSP/EDM brakes though.. can't wait to not have to deal with that s*** allen key in the rear calipers, I hate that piece of crap.

Theres this trick I learned on Subarus.. not sure if its would apply on any other systems but you just crack the bleeders open and let it sit for about half an hour and it would self bleed itself.. Weird.. I never learned that way. I was taught this by this Subaru Dealership and it drove fine.!

If you need the process on how to bleed brakes the two person way give me a pm..

its called gravity bleeding.... it's halfassed and has lots of problems... let's NOT talk about that

Really? I'll have to take your word for it since those stealership mechanics are on flat rate and would do anything to speed up their work... half assed or not! Thanks for the input.

Anyways back on topic..

Edwin:
How much did this kit run you total?
Is there somewhere we can buy the whole set up, or do we need to piece it together ourselves?
Thanks

I have found (slotted) rotors here in Austalia that would make this work for the local P5s (SP20s). Mazda Tribute (278mm) or Mazda6/Atenza (274mm) rotors would work for the front, assuming the pad can accomodate the extra 2mm radius on the 278mm rotors. Mazda6/Atenza 280mm rear rotors also work.

Now if I can convice either of the 2 or 3 local Ozzie rotor manufacturers to do the rotors mentioned above as blanks or with the correct centre bore and PCD, we will have a large front/rear big brake kit for the 1.8s...

Gav.

I have found a solution for the 1.8, but the Tribute and Mazda6 rotors should just go straight on the 5lug P5 anyhow (if they are like the AUDM spec).

You need the front V6 Cougar rotors, or 05 Focus/06 XR5T rotors for front/rear. This will achieve a 278/280mm biggish (but balanced) brake upgrade for 1.8 owners using the Mazdaspeed or BJ 323F-Sport calipers.

It's not all straight forward though. The Focus rotors need to be ordered at 4x100mm from point of manufacture, and to be machined down 1mm total width to fit within the brake pads.

The centre bore is also 63.5~64mm instead of 55mm, however this still leaves enough room around the wheel studs for strength and to bite against the wheel boss. You cannot work around this, it's just one of those sucky things us 1.8 owners have to put up with. However since the rotor doesn't sit flush against the hub this way, it shouldn't matter...?

I don't know how nice the brake retailers are in the US, but I've found a place down south here who is happy to work with me on this setup. ie: Aquire rotors and machine/drill them to suit my specifications listed above. The biggest problem for me is a distinct lack of USDM BJ-Mazdaspeed Protegs or EDM BJ-323F-Sports getting around this country...

Cheers,
Gav.

EDIT: If you're really desperate or have access to them, some of the Honda CG Accord, EP Civc and S2000 rotors are worth a look too if you don't mind machining slightly. But why bother when Fazdord have near direct swaps...

the mazda6 front and rear rotors are the *same* as what the EDM 323F sport has (which is what I have now), so there you go... you can use those to check on your sizes

I've finally taken the time to look through the prices again.... the difference is big:

USDM (MSP):
rear right caliper: BPYH-26-98Z list price: $407.70
rear left caliper: BPYH-26-99Z list price: $407.70
front right caliper: BPYH-33-98Z list price: $546.95
front left caliper: BPYH-33-99Z list price: $546.95
rear brake pads: GGYB-26-43Z list price: $82.01
front brake pads: CBY3-33-23Z list price: $109.85
total (without pads): $1909.30
total (with pads): $2101.16
(shocked)

EDM:
rear right caliper: GFYP-26-98ZA list price: $316.98
rear left caliper: GFYP-26-99ZA list price: $316.98
front right caliper: GFYP-33-98Z list price: $225.30
front left caliper: GFYP-33-99Z list price: $225.30
rear brake pads: GGYM-26-43Z list price: $92.94
front brake pads: CBY4-33-23Z list price: $193.12
total (without pads): $1084.56
total (with pads): $1370.62
(poke)

AND let's not forget rotors (same for anywhere in the world):
rear rotor: GF3Y-26-251A list price $71.79
front rotor: GF3Y-33-25XA list price $88.21
total set: $320

final LIST price total:
USDM: $2421.16
EDM: $1690.62
difference: $730.54 (ughdance)

remember that's just ass raping RETAIL prices, obviously I didn't pay those prices... so considering what discounts you can get from all the places you know of, the discount percentage is up to your imagination... either way, the EDM s*** is cheaper if you can get your hands on the parts.... your parts importers maybe able to get those parts for you... these are all BRAND NEW parts, no reman or reconditioned s***, no "alternate" parts like 626 s***... they are parts meant specifically for the car and are same parts as equiped on a vehicle shipped from japan

I can get the rotors easy enough it seems (with some customisation...), but since it's hard for some (me) trying to source the EDM/JDM/USDM cailpers, I'm trying to put together a list of optional calipers that suit this brake conversion.

Front:
- BJ Mazdaspeed Protege
- BJ Mazdaspeed Familia (2001)
- BJ 323F Sport
- GD/GE/GF 626/MX-6/Probe???
- GG Mazda6???

Rear:
- BJ Mazdaspeed Protege
- BJ Mazdaspeed Familia (2001)
- BJ 323F Sport
- GG Mazda6???

What about the 626/MX-6/Probe for the front and the Mazda6 for front/rear calipers? I'm pretty sure the 626/MX-6/Probe calipers will fit, but are they the larger sized calipers as those above? Has anyone seen the Mazda6 calipers up close? It would be unlike Mazda to make silly changes where they don't need to, but it doesn't hurt asking...

Gav.

the 6 does not uses the same calipers at all... the only RHD vehicles I found to use the same calipers are:

front:
2001+ CP Premacy (w/3rd row seats)
97+ GW 626 wagon diesel (probably UK only)
97-98 GW Capella wagon diesel (2WD & 4WD)
99+ GW Capella wagon (4WD)
2001 MazdaSpeed Familia

rear:
2001+ CP Premacy (w/3rd row seats)
97+ GW 626 wagon diesel (probably UK only)
97-98 GW Capella wagon diesel (2WD)
99+ GW Capella wagon (2WD, 261mm rotor type)
2001 MazdaSpeed Familia

FWIW, the new generation of mazdas uses many ford brake components (main supplier is ATE) and there have been more issues with them then the older japanese supplied and designed brakes
