ECU Memory!!

2004 Mazda3 Hatchback
Hey fellow mazda owners, for those of you that have the automatic Mazda 3, have you ever noticed the shift points changing through second gear? The reason I ask is because everytime the car shifts into second it will stay in second all the way up to practically 5000 to 6000rpm's. And thats without putting the pedal to the metal. Its on a normal take off without trying to race the engine rpms up. It used to go right into third by 3000rpms or a little more. Does the computer record the shift points on it to adapt to your driving? I dont mind it doing this because you can totally feel the car pick up as it goes through the rpm band and by the time you hit 5500 rpms or 6000rpms you hauling ass out of second gear into thrid gear.

that would be odd if it was adjusting your shift points.... if it bothers you it might be worth mentioning to the dealer the next time you are there.

Yes, the computer, OBDII is a learning ECU. It takes into account your driving habits and adjusts everything, including the shift points on the automatic transaxle.

The computer doesn't change WOT shift points, but it will change your driving habit shift point. The only way to change WOT shifts is an aftermarket chip.

For instance, if you always take off from a light at half throttle, it will put the shift points in that area of rpm's, and if you always take off from a light with little throttle, it'll adjust the shift point to that amount of throttle. My .02

Thats why it's a good practice to re-set the computer once in a while if you leave the atx in auto. I don't worry about it since if I want the shift points to change on my MZ3, I just put it in manual and I have control and don't have to depend on the computer for shifting.

hmm i've never heard of the computer doing that, and i've driven a ford focus, ford taurus, mazda tribute, and a lexus ls330 all in autos. i drove my ford focus like i wanted it to blow up and it never changed my shift points.

It doesn't affect WOT shifts.
