Turbo MP3

I have a good buddy with a 97 Mitsu Eclipse GSX, the car has over 100k on it and the stock turbo is starting to go (the bearing) He has been looking at 16G Big Wheels and other turbos, hoping that with a FMIC, tuning, and the other supplementary mods to be around 400hp. Upon searhing Ebay I came across a few kits with a decent looking stainless mani, a T4, external wastegate, and a FMIC; for much cheaper than purchasing a 16G and a decent front mount kit... As compared to the 16G where does the T4 sit, from what I've read on the kit it says 500 or more hp, depending on wheel trims. So mainly my concern is what is the better option, a T4 kit , or buying a 16G Big wheel and a FMIC kit?

Here is the T4 kit http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DSM-Eclipse-T4-Monster-Turbo-Kit-FMIC-WG-Install_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33742QQitemZ8051452961QQrdZ1

I personally dont know it seems almost too cheap... But money is kind of an issue for my buddy(still in school), he doesn't need a 1/4 mile monster, just a quick car for the street. If you guys can point me in the best way to lead him it would be HIGHLY appreciated.

PS sorry for bringing this here, but i find DSM forums to be a cluster**** and didn't want to join, and haven't found anything useful there, and I feel comfortable here... THANKS

If the turbo is starting to go, I would wager the engine is next......

Student + modifying a high mileage car + not much money = trouble

i found all that out the hard way....make sure you make the right choices...im still in school and struggling on car payments and got another car barely running.
but to tell you about that kit...i dont know if you have ever heard of those companies..i have a xspower huge frontmount ic on my srt(i got way to good of a deal) but do some searching, theyer products have been know of getting so hot and cracking..not the ic's that i know of...but the mani's,turbo's,and wastegates are prone to setting people back big$$$...have you ever heard of those YZ turbo's from china? they were selling them for a while.....but not to give someone total bad name....just research.

Thanks guys, I guess I shouldn't say he is short on money, but he is on a budget and wants to save as much money as he can now to help go towards new internals within the next 8 months or less...

At this time the plans are
-new turbo
-FMIC
-Walbro fuel pump
-Injectors???
-FMU,
-Boost guage, and Wideband O2
-Clutch
-Custom 3" turboback exhaust
-Internals next winter

His current mods are just

His current mods are simply a catback exhaust, a k&n filter minus airbox, and a Greddy EBC

Im pointing him back toward the 16G, I think in the long run it will be less headaches and hopefully pull the 400 mark, and probablye be more fun to drive overall

DSMTuners is a very good site to learn from. I would not recommend that kit you posted. As with most things, you get what you pay for. If your friend wants 400+hp 2G then he needs to do things right. No one in the DSM world recommends SSAutoChrome for any upgrades (or as DSMers calls them, SSAutocrap).

A 16G is hard to get to hit the 400HP mark. I would recommend a td06h-20G turbo. Quick spooling, can make awesome power and keep it nice for daily driving at the same time. With that turbo, he could reach 375awhp without needing to upgrade the internals or being annoyed with daily driving. I pieced together a great upgrade list for the 20G a while ago when I almost had my hands on great 2G project car.

As long as your friend does and did the constant maintenance on the 2G and didn't beat the crap out of it, he shouldn't have a problem upgrading. He's at 100k miles so crankwalk isn't real likely.

Like it's been said, you guys have a lot of research to do, but have one of the best platforms to work with.
