Just wondering since the Navigation says it's "dvd-based"...can you play dvds in it? Thanks, Brett

DVDs in the DVD-Based Navigation??

i am going to venture a guess and say NO.. i have no real proof with the Mazda3, however, my boss has a Nissan Murano with the DVD Navigation system.. we opened it up and took out the navigation DVD and put in a movie and it would not play it.

I didn't know if you put the disc IN the dash. My cousin has a Mercedes and you just slide it in the cd-player slot.

It is a special DVD system, I have it in my Mazda3, it is like DVD-RAM with special encoding or something.
Putting regular DVDs voids the warranty.

i doubt it voids the warranty.
it dosent work.
im thinking more on the lines of it dosent have an OS or any other programing to let it play the DVD movie. when yout put the nav's dvd, i think that disk includes the OS as well as the maps so that the OS can be updated as new maps come out.

when you say DVD you arent refering to strictly movies (althought popular speech may lead some people to think that). DVD refers to a way of writting data on the disk. As opposed to the CDs that we all are familiar with, DVDs use a smaller laser and different media and write systems to allow more data to be put on a similar sized disk and allows said data to be accessed at a faster rate.

the guy up at a local car audio place told me the only way to use the factory dvd player is to take it out and ship it to this company in germany i think it was. he didnt give a name or anything but said that its expensive (like $600) and they just replac a chip or sumthin like that.

what the ****, thats such a rip off. if the dealer told me i had a dvd player, i'd automatically assume that the crock of s*** can play some damn movies

well the dealer never said you have a DVD player; they said you have a navigation system that uses DVD disks.

It wouldnt be a hack; it would be an entire rewrite. I doubt there is any support to FMV written anywhere. Then the proper codecs would have to be integrated (video, audio, DTS 5.1, etc). IMHO (if you didnt have the nav system), it would be easier to just by the shroud and other related parts, hide a dvd player somewhere and then throw your own screen in there.

I saw a kid a few days ago that had turned is Mazda3s 4-door into a show queen, but he modified the DVD-based NAV system to play movies. I saw Lord of the Rings playing with my own eyes. The kid said (I say "kid" because he was not old enough to smoke...) that he sent the DVD enclosure off to be unlocked, which allows DVD movies to be played. The only problem is, like an earlier poster pointed out, there is no native firmware on the system for playing DVD movies, so everytime you want to switch from playing movies to DVD-Nav, you have to kill the power to the unit and then literally "reboot" with the DVD-Nav disc. In order to play movies, you have to put a special DVD disc in that loads a player application and MPEG-2 codec. Also, since there is no sophisticated firmware on the device, the unit does not support DVD menus, only straight playback.
Something else that the kid didn't say, but I guessed about was, "How do you get DVD movie sound to the car stereo?". He was using the stock stereo, so I'm assuming he had a FM Modulator hidden behind the DVD drive... Don't know for a fact, but I do know that the only regular audio connector is mono.
In the excitement of seeing Frodo on the small screen, I forgot to ask the name of the company that did the mod. Do'h!
