hey wuts up everyone,
just curious, i went for an inspection today which i might add was expired, but onto the matter at hand, upon passing, the mechanic informed me that both of my front Dunlop 195/50/16's are shot and upon looking at them they are f'in BALD.
just wondering if anyone else has experienced problems with the OEM tires.
i have about 27K on my 03 P5, seems kinda premature for balding of this type. (uhm)
thanx in advance for any input

thats about right, I'm about to have some Kumho Ecsta ASX's put on my car as soon as they come in and I'm still a little under 15000. I'd say you did pretty good for stocks. And yes, they are garbage.

damn mountjonas, i dunno how u pulled that one off
and i hear ya cellerator, wish i would have known how crappy they were when i replaced one of them that had a nail in it, hell i would have shelled out the cash and bought 4 new tires but def not Dunlops

my OEM tires are basically trashed now and i'm just over 30k...i was decently happy with them until after 10k...so now i'm looking for new tires but i can't decide what to get...thinking of the dunlop fm 901s...cuz they're the exact fit as the stocks and are cheap...

anybody got a review these tires??

Just the front huh? Rotate much?

I have 4 in my garage that have 7k miles or so on them. Still look really good.

The overall assumption and determination here is that the stock Dunlops suck ass. I tend to agree as I'm approaching about 30K and they're near end of life. I'll get through winter with them and then it's gone with 'em. They were great for say the first 10k then down hill from there.

I would have been happier with a set of Potenza's as stockers over these.

Rotating as often as possible is a good idea. I've rotated mine often (every other oil change or so).

hahha, i thought thats what u would say mountjonas.
well at least i dont feel so bad since everyone seems to feel the same way and be experiencing the same situations in general.
oh well....money who needs it, why cant it just grow on trees

go to tirerack.com
They are selling Kumho ASX's for cheaper than the stock pieces of crap and they perform better from what I have heard.

42,000 miles - worn almost down to the wear bars but not quite.

Bought the same ones off Tire Rack, got about 1000 miles on them so far.

my oem tires lasted 47K miles. the last 15k or so i didn't even rotate them.
47K is crazy.....i am luck to get half that as many other members on the board.

There are a ton of threads about tires. search for Dunlops, or even tires, and you will find reviews on almost every single tire. in fact, it is how I chose what tire to get.

As for me, the Dunflops were nice until it rained. And in Florida, thats is all the time. So I got Yokohama AVS-ES 100's from tires.com. I had great service from tires.com, free shipping, and I just had the local stealership install them. 18,000 miles later, they look and drive like new. In fact I drove in heavy rain last night and this morning without a problem. When it comes time for new tires, I will get them again. Best $400 spent on tires, ever.

you got 27K out of them....you did just fine. You have to remember they are PERFORMANCE tires.....believe it or not they are....and ANY performance tire is not going to last all that long...its the price you pay for having tires that stay stuck to the road when you put the demand on them in the corners.

I sold my stockers with 20K on them and only 1/32 of wear. Last I heard they were still going strong. I've got like 30K and the equivaltent of like 10-12 autocrosses on my 17" ASX's and they still aren't shot yet...

Yeah, remember that the Dumbflops are V-rated. If you want long lasting tires, get some H-rated ones. There is always a trade-off between gripping power and longevity. There is no perfect tire.

Just think that in racing motorsports, they change tires SEVERAL times in ONE race! Sure you can race on tires that last 60K miles on them, but you will never win a race when your opponents keep passing you around corners :D

im so tired of hearing crap about how the stock tires suck. guess what?!?! they are v-rated performance tires which means they wont last as long as all season tires people. especially if you often partake in 'spirited' driving. i have 32K miles on my stock tires. this is my 3rd winter with them and i have had no problems (knock on wood) and i still have some good life left in them. i think they will last to 40K easily.

this leads me to believe that people are driving a bit crazier then they are leading on. if you go through them in 15K miles, you seriously need to evaluate your driving habits.

The problem I had with the Dunflops was not due to the treadwear. My problem was at 20 MPH in typical FL rain, I would lose traction/hydroplane. That problem started week 1 of ownership. That, compiled with then flat spotting after a short lockup of the front tires a few months later, lead to their replacement. Even if they did not flat spot, I would have replaced then due to lack of traction in rain. When replaced at 8K miles, the treadwear on the back tires was not too bad.

yeah, they do suck in the rain. And the snow. And Sleet. Just about anything but dry kinda makes the tires a bit sketchy. But, they are predictable. I know what these tires can do (slip, sliding away) and as long as it's dry - they are fine. In the rain, I slow down and use my head.

Our cars - even the LX,DX suspension - tend to have very little body lean when turning. That's not to say it isn't there - but compared to other cars in the same class - it's less. In all it's forms - the 3rd gen protege is a blast to drive - doubly so in the mp3/msp for the combination of increased hp/handling. I think part of the problem is that we get used to driving our cars at or near the handling limits - while the roads are fine. When the roads aren't fine - we all try to dial things down a little if we are smart - if not we quickly learn that the stock tires slip.

Slow down, be safe or at least learn to fake it well enough. It's 8:30am, and I've gotten less sleep than usual this week - I hope I was making sense just now. If not - someone do something.
