Drone from HELL

Well, I am pissed!
I was referred by a few people around here to a local shop to do some exhaust work. I already did the OBX header and had bought a used Ractive Axle-back off of another forum member.
The nuts & bolts on the stocker were completely rusted together. Fused.
Since I wanted to replace the midpipe and put in a high-flow cat, I figured let the shop grind off the stocker and relocate my second O2 sensor to get rid of the CEL.
The told me $200 to $300 for the whole job. I figured that sounded OK.
Well.....
I show up to pick up the car and they start this story.
They say the O2 sensor was cross-threaded and couldn't be re-used. They ordered one and were waiting for it to arrive. Then they show me a bill for $394!!! I sed "WTF"?
So they charged 3 hours at $75 and $160 in parts!
I was so angry I wanted to choke the guy!
On top of this, the tip is not centered and the can is on a wierd angle. (see attached pics)
I ask what the deal is with that and he tells me he tried to bend the hangers to get it centered but that was the best he could do.
I'm boiling mad and my wife is waiting for me, telling me to stay calm.
I go to start it and it is ridiculously LOUD.
I've already been pulled over 5 times since I got the car in 9/04, no tickets, only warnings for speed. Now I KNOW the cops will pull me over with this level of volume every chance they get!
But, I am on my lunch and have to get back to work, so I pay and tell the guy I am not happy and will talk with him about this later.
Driving back to work I can barely hear the radio. It drones through the whole powerband. The pedal is now a volume pedal. My shifter, steering wheel and even my seat vibrate! (I guess you could say that it is now a "massage" seat)
When I left off the gas, I can hear that metal on metal RATTLE.
I then get a call to tell me that the O2 sensor is in and costs $225!!
I was like you gotta be kidding me! I went online and found it for $69, but then also found other ones that were $140 and up.
I haven't been able to tell what the difference is yet.
Anyway, so I ordered a silencer from Ebay because NO ONE had the Ractive.
I even talked to Toucan Industries in Florida and Canada. I know that it is a MT2000 for a 3-1/2" tip. But nobody has it anywhere.
So I am supposed to go back to the shop to look at what was done and talk about these issues. Now I have to ask how much they will **** me for putting in a resonator too.
I have Kartboy hangers, but they aren't installed because when I got to the shop to drop it off, I couldn't find them in my trunk. Turned out they were at home. I also have yet to install my AWR motor mounts. I figure both these will help with the vibrations at least.
I haven't been able to get under the car yet to see the work, but the one weld I can see does not look so great. The bends do not appear to be bad, but I don't think they are mandrel bent.
So, now I have to go back and b**** and moan. I think that once I can see underneath I might be in for more surprises. Ugh.
I will give an update when that happens.
Learn from my mistake...get a written quote for all work!

Uhm ow. What's the name of the place so we know to stay away from it?

I guess you should have gotten a written estimate, I would have freaked if they quoted 200-300 and then tried to charge that.

Makes me worried about getting a midpipe made. I'd get the MAM but I don't want 2.5 inch piping.

Sorry for your troubles man. Just a heads up that motor mounts will not help with the vibrating (couldn't tell if you were being sarcastic) If you think it's bad now, it will be much worse with stiffer AWR Urathane mounts.

Thanks for the support guys (no sarcasm)
I actually thought that I read somewhere around here that the motor mounts would help. I can see how stiffer could go either way.
Stiffer = less vibration of engine = less vibration overall but more of it getting transferred to the exhaust, etc...

Oh yeah...World Class Automotive out here on Cape Cod in Harwich (from now on to be known as "Raw Ass" Automotive)

Any other input on the pics or resonator and silencer?

Yeah..AWR mounts won't help the vibration and it will make the exhaust note louder and deeper as well.

I hate to break the news to you, but anything ractive is s***.... they're all cheaply made and since your muffler is used, I bet you the glass packs have already disintegrated which causes this massive droning and weed eater sound...

furthermore, every custom exhaust I've seen have been s***... they're always half assed jobs.... bad welds and bad positioning.... I've seen saw on this civic one time that instead of using exhaust hangers on the weapon-r muffler, the dumbass shop that did it welded it STRAIGHT onto the frame... this caused tons of rattles... it's laziness that caused this because the muffler is a generic piece of s*** and its hangers were nowhere near where the hangers on the car were... that customer was bitching about how we ****** up his exhaust when we "fixed" the postioning of the muffler.... I told him we don't weld exhausts onto the frame, and it took a while for him to tell me that he changed the muffler at some shop.... so in the end I told him to **** off and go back to that dumbass shop because he voided our warranty

"custom" exhausts don't save you money and they bring headaches... you should've bought a catback exhaust system manufactured SPECIFICALLY for your car

I have the ractive axle back.. its fine on my car.

I've seen several custom exhaust that look good. But they are all loud. And that angle sucks. I'd be mad too.

i have a custom 3" turbo back and it's fine ... not as loud as most i've seen, it's centered, looks good ... i guess it just depends on the shop and how much you pay for it.

Argh! (bang)
Damn, Damn, DAMN!
I am so disappointed. Anyway to check the muffler's glass packs then?
I wish I had never done this. I thought I could get the performance without paying as much but I got ******.

Sorry to hear the news of getting jacked...and that exhaust looks like crap....

1st rule, always stay there and watch them as they work, most of them are cool enough and will ask you how you want the muffler placed so you can actually place it how you want, well at least here in Vegas when I've had 4 exhausts done they all let me watch and pick the location of the mufflers and the dumps.

Best of luck, they should fix it for you as well. They should also of called you with the price of the O2 and asked you if you wanted it or not.

IVe seen plenty of custom exhausts done right. They were expensive as hell though.

In other news we should really get a thread going on shaddy shops so no two people make the same mistake.

unlucky man, i'd be going back to that store and tell them to repair all there f#*k ups for free!! I think my nanna could do a better job than that

because the weld looks ugly does not mean it is not a good weld. some people are crazy not every shop migs or tigs their welds. s*** most exhaust shops do it like that. old school rod welding.
