Drifting

Just curious, does anyone do drifting like on the movie Fast and Furious, I went to see the third one today, had fun watching on big screen with great sound effects!

The question was basically, if you had a turbo timer which was hooked up to your e-brake, would your car shut off if you used your ebrake while driving, because for drifting you sometimes need to use the ebrake.

Any ideas, guys?? Thanks!

You would generally want a rear wheel drive car for drifting. Sometimes front wheel drive is used but not many people consider the FF platform a true drifting platform because you cant control the oversteer with the throttle, etc.

The e brake is used to initiate a drift (break the rear tires loose). You can use the ebrake to drift without any such device hooked up to it. Just go and yank it while you are driving (obviously don't really do it!!) A turbo timer hooked up to an e brake would serve no function, I have no clue what you mean by that.....

I will be drifting with a mustang I have soon and my friends drift also. Few cars that float around are AE86 Corolla, 1JZ MKIII Supra, A bunch of 240's.

Wow, thanks for the info, I didn't know you couldn't do drifting with front wheel drives. I saw the evo do drifts in the movie, and some other really well modded cars!

About the turbo timer, i was just curious to know if the car would shut off when you pulled on the ebrake or not. I don't have my timer hooked up to the ebrake so i wasn't sure. I just thought that for people who drift, they would have to use the turbo timer without the ebrake connectionon? But, since we MSP owners can't really get into the drifting sports with our cars, it really isn't much use to know about the ebrake connection with the timer or not! lol

I just thought, i'd find out why no one ever has talked about drifint on this forum as well!

Thanks again for taking the time to reply, and good luck with your drifting, Have Fun!!!

the evo was made rear wheel drive in the movie. There is somebody on the drift circuit who uses basically the same car, again converted to RWD.

COMMON SENSE
if the engine shuts off when lifting the e-brake when a turbo-timer is installed, i think it would be a very bad idea, if you are in a hill, with a light that takes ages and all you wanna do is put it in neutral and put the e-brake on and laugh at other while they hold their foot down...
another thing would be somehow loosing your brakes, trying to use the e-brake while the car is moving, engine shutting off...and loosing powersteering...
i can think of a million reasons why you would need to use the e-brake other than when drifting....again....just common sense...

1. Do not try to drift your MSP. You do not drift FWD vehicles period unless you want to be made fun of.
2. Turbo timer only activates when the key is turned off. the ebrake is just in case someone tries to take off with your car while its counting down.
3. That was a movie, many of the stunts were staged and with professional drivers. If you want to drift take it to a sanctioned event and go to a driving school. Please learn the difference between hollywood and real life.

Not sure what you're getting at here with the e-brake + turbo timer shutting off the car, but I think you have it wrong. The way I see it, the turbo timer splices into the e-brake wire just as a safety feature, allowing the car to idle for a preset time only when the ebrake is pulled and the key is out of the ignition. It does this in order to keep it(the car) from rolling away while stopped because of inclines, wind, what have you. At least that's what i thought(shrug)

Sorry Guys!! I didn't mean to confuse everyone here. I really wasn't thinking of drifting, was a thought after seeing the movie why no one has any topics on it here. Of course, now i understand why, sorry again for the silly question.

the ebrake thing with the turbo timer thing, i had my timer installed, but they left the ebrake not connected and it still works fine. I just didn't know why they didn't conect my ebrake, but, i think i will ask them to do so, because as i've just found out from on here, the ebrake will only work as a security feature once the car is shut off, so, it's probably a good idea to have it connected. Thanks for taking the time to reply everyone!!!

I don't get this whole "drifting" craze. Here in East Tennessee, we've been doing this for 25+ years when outrunning the law or just raising hell... we just call it "drivin' sideways".

Its a shame that the americans have killed another great thing. I was watching drifting vids way before it came to the U.S. and now its dead. It has become more of a competion than art. Plus because of these things ppl are doing all these stupid ass things. Its really a shame.

I agree with you. I was watching Drift vids for a long time now. I just wish that it could go back to the time when no one knew about it...

I agree drifting has changed a little since it came here in America, but in Japan it still remains more of an art. While competitions are regularly held in Japan, they tend to judge the skill of a driver instead of who can overtake who, etc.

I think you should hook up the ebrake safety feature, it's not a neccesity(?sp) but it is easy to do and gives you just a little piece of mind. find the wire from the turbo timer run it under the center console and splice it to the white with yellow striped wire coming off the ebrake. Just remember that you have to engage your ebake to turn on the timer before turning the car off. but if you were driving the timer wouldn't have any effect if you pulled the ebrake, only once you turned the key off. and don't worry about the people that are gonna give you a hard time for asking a question, no matter how silly it may be. If you have a question or there is something you don't understand about the car just search for a similar situation then ask if you need to after that, you might catch crap from forum members that apparently always knew everything there was to know about everything, but there will always be the forum members that will answer you straight up without ragging on you.
