dr says i need to exercise more and eat better

:
GLA45
i say he's full of it. i called to get the results of my blood test from last week and the nurse i spoke to (who didn't speak english too well) said the dr says i should do more cardio and eat healthier. i assumed it was because of cholesterol levels but didn't ask cause i probably wouldn't have understood anyways and she said she's going to mail me stuff. so i'm 5'8.5", 179lbs according to what they told me at the dr appt. the scale at the gym agrees and at different times i've had it measure body fat it's been between 11 and 13%. i exercise form ~1.5 hours every night, usually an hour of weights and 20 mins of cardio then abs for 7-8 minutes when i get home. i'll admit i don't eat super healthy but i don't eat too poorly. so unless i switch to unseasoned chicken and lettuce i don't think it's going to change much. should i listen to the dr and take all joy out of my food?

well, if you're not feeling any ill effects from your current routine then you should be doing ok. it's not a bad idea to switch up your diet from time to time. i thought i was fine, but found out i had slightly higher blood pressure than normal. so i adjusted my diet to eat less sodium. my work out routine is about the same.

I'm 5'8 and 170

I just need to stop drinking so much pepsi, eating sweets, and eating out so much. I eat too much s***.

I am definitely mixing up the diet now.

Sweet medical advice. LOL

Just because you feel fine doesnt mean you actually are. There is a reason he is a doctor. Maybe because he is versed in helping people with their medicinal needs. I would honestly listen to him. Start eating a little better and if anything park farther away from your work and when you go places. every little bit of exercise helps :)

You can help control your cholesterol by watching the amount of fats, butters, and oils that you use. Adding some heart healthy breakfast items such as oatmeal or cheerios will help too. You may just have high cholesterol due to hereditary reasons.

Best thing to do is drink plenty of water, try to eat some Omega 3 fatty acids like nuts or fish, and try some heart healthy breakfast items.

high cholesterol does run in my family. i also remembered that i don't eat many vegetables, which i'm sure doesn't help things :)

Good advice. Also, check the ratios of ldl/hdl once you get your paperwork...

Its a good thing you don't smoke jared.. that sent my cholesterol through the roof.

deffinatly cut out soda (even diet cause thats just staining your teeth among other things) and as said above some heart healthy breakfast items and snacks (granola bars/fruit/trialmix/nuts in moderation)

not that i can talk weighing in at 250... i do carry it well though cause no one believes i weigh what i do... been eating better and working out again since the new year just need to stick to it.. high cholesterol in my family as well... last blood work came back good though it was 7 years ago.....

i'm 5'11" and weigh ~155 right now, that doesn't mean i'm healthy. I've been eating like s*** recently. Thats starting to change (as much as it can eating on campus anyway). No sodas, more veggies, less fat. I think in general though if you exercise you shouldn't be too bad off, but hey what do i know....

Yeah, 5'7" here and 180lbs. Haven't been able to exercise at all really since I rolled my MSP and messed up my back 2 years ago. The pain is constant even without any physical activity (and it's not due to weak muscles because I go through physical therapy to keep my back muscles from wasting away, it's because of two herniated discs and some additional bulged discs putting pressure on my spinal cord that's the problem). Eventually I'll get the surgery.

So I'm completely out of shape. Luckily, I found something that I am capable of doing in small doses, and my doctor approves -- swimming. I joined the local gym just for their indoor pool and have been going there 3 days a week and swimming a couple of laps. Only been two weeks and I feel a little better already...and the pain hasn't gotten any worse.

5'9 and 158 but I'm still out of shape. I used to be slender and very athletic. Now I feel soft, pudgy and lazy. So I'm on a diet and an exercise plan. I went from 165 down to 158 but I'm trying to get more muscle rather than lose actual weight. I'm really looking for the fat percentage to go down.

sounds more like a hereditary issue than a lifestyle issue jared, but do try to cut back on junk foods, not saying you should stop eating good tasting food, just eat less processed/fast food

Not to put a damper or steal someone thread, but you do have to watch out considerably. I am 29, 5'8", at 170 give or take. I did 9 years in the Army and have been out for 1 yr, it wasnt till I was out for a whole year that I went to get a check up with my new doctor. No less than 24 hrs after doing all the blood works and checks did she call me up and say I have kidney failure. Now it came as a shock to me, dont drink, dont smoke, I thought I ate healthier than athletes, doesnt run in the family and yet I still got it. My life has changed, all my routines, from working out to being limited to only 4 oz of meat in any given meal too. Its hard, its harder to deal with, but you have to watch what you do and pay attention to the doctors. Had they found this a year ago I wouldnt be as far progressed as I am now. Now all I can do is sit and wait till my kidney lose all function and hope that when that happens I have a donor lined up. I wish you the best, take care of yourself. But if you doubt your doctor, please get a second opinion.

one more thing i thought about... make sure to mix up your excercise routine you can train your muscles to a certian routine and then you will stop getting the benefits from it. more cardio less weights on certian days, different weights with higher/lower reps, different exercises, etc... mens health magazine has some great stuff in there on how to work out certian groups or on health benefits from food and what not... you should check it out.

What does your daily diet look like? A snap shot....

Also ask for a copy of your bloodwork, you are the patient its your right. Once you get it, post it here or PM me and I can give you an honest answer.
