Turns out I've got hereditary cholesterol + I'm diabetic. Apparently the diabetes throws the cholesterol waaaay off. Doc says once I get my diabetes under control the cholesterol should get better too.
And I'm also on cholesterol drugs + taking flaxseed pills & omega3 fish oil pills. I also go to the gym daily and do the cardo + strength training thing. The hardest part is the diet though. I was a fast food or steak kinda guy. Now it's fruit, veggies, oatmeal, skim milk (ack!), skinless chicken tits, etc.

On a gross note...the way I came to find out that I had high cholesterol (and in turn find out I was diabetic) was that I had these 'warts' popping up on my knuckles & elbows. I was like WTF are these things...where are they coming from???! So I went to the doc to see about getting them frozen or lazered off or whatever they do to get rid of them...as well as found out how the f**k I got them in the first place. He said that he had heard that in somre rare occasions cholesterol can build up deposits under the skin. On a whim he ordered a blood test...lo-&-behold my cholesterol was through the roof.

This was about 2-1/2 months ago and I've been on the drugs, diet, and exercise since then and the 'warts' or zanthomas are all but gone!

Sweet medical advice. LOL

Just because you feel fine doesnt mean you actually are. There is a reason he is a doctor. Maybe because he is versed in helping people with their medicinal needs. I would honestly listen to him. Start eating a little better and if anything park farther away from your work and when you go places. every little bit of exercise helps :)

well, i'm talking about your average person. not somebody who eats like 3 slices of pizza for breakfast, a burrito for lunch, a steak dinner with extra butter sauce for dinner and wash it down with 5 beers.

I miss Whole Foods in W. Hartford...

Closest Whole Foods to me in Rochester is in Toronto Ontario.. and then I'd havfe to pay ridiculous taxes and part to bring things across the border and all that crap.. ugh... next closest one is in Pittsburgh, which is easily a 5 hour drive. bah!

i say he's full of it. i called to get the results of my blood test from last week and the nurse i spoke to (who didn't speak english too well) said the dr says i should do more cardio and eat healthier. i assumed it was because of cholesterol levels but didn't ask cause i probably wouldn't have understood anyways and she said she's going to mail me stuff. so i'm 5'8.5", 179lbs according to what they told me at the dr appt. the scale at the gym agrees and at different times i've had it measure body fat it's been between 11 and 13%. i exercise form ~1.5 hours every night, usually an hour of weights and 20 mins of cardio then abs for 7-8 minutes when i get home. i'll admit i don't eat super healthy but i don't eat too poorly. so unless i switch to unseasoned chicken and lettuce i don't think it's going to change much. should i listen to the dr and take all joy out of my food?
Did you tell your doctor how much you exercise already? I'm sure that you're exercising enough. The other part of the equation, the diet, is the only other thing they can tell you before they pull out the script pad - and they generally don't prescribe cholesterol meds to young guys.

Asking could possibly work (depends if they are going to give you the truth or not), but if its a serious concern as nutty as it sounds you could just not eat at restaurants and see what happens after the next check up
You don't have to go this far, you can ask if they use them and still make wise menu choices. Avoid anything you think is cooked in a deep fryer. Avoid the extra fatty food and go ahead with steamed veggies and lean meat cuts like chicken.

Sean, What are you looking to take? Brands I use and like are Jarrow, KAL, Solaray, Solgar, Barleans (flax) and something NOW.

P.S. Puritan's Pride... sound too good to be true? Chances are... it is. You have to question where they source their materials and what kind of fillers and binders they use, how is their quality?

Here's how I rank the better/well known companies.
1. New Chapter (Organic Company, Pricey but great products)
2. Jarrow
3. Solgar
4. Source Naturals
5. Solaray
6. KAL
10. NOW

eating healthy is a good start.. eating healthy can be just as tasty sometimes.. food preparation is key. :D
