downshifted past redline, oops.

last night I was on the highway and I misjudged my tach range, and I shifted from 3-2 too fast. I was probably @ 60mph. Tach I believe hit around 7500 for a second before I clutched it again to drop it. (In 3rd I believe I was around 5000) Redline is @ 6500 and rev limiter is @ about 7000, I think. Car runs and idles fine, no unusual sounds occurred at all the rest of my drive home.

I know I made a human error, so no need for a lecture. Is it worth a (possibly $100'ish) compression check or is 1k over redline for a second not a huge concern? Furthermore, on a less important but curious note, should the gearbox have locked me out?

If you caused any serious damage, it wouldn't take a compression check to notice it. I wouldn't try it again though.

Yeah one comfort is it wasn't a true misshift where say, I was attempting a 3-4 shift and accidentally jammed it into 2nd... with already being @ redline in 3rd. ...at least I had 1.5k of buffer room to work with.

I was doing some 'spirited' driving on the highway, and my brain wasn't in gear when I decided to decelerate by downshifting. Next time I'll just use the pedal in the middle :)

No way, you're toast. If I were you I would GIVE me your 5 (wife needs a new car) and go get a Rondo with automatic. That should be punishment enough.

Just kidding. Redline is like the Pirate Code, more of a guideline.

Sustained revs at 7500 will mess you up though. Kids, don't try this at home!
 
That's why an AMT is the best of two world. No human error and no power sapping torque converter.

What happened to Antonov transmission?
 
The Mazda 5 must have a smooth transmission to be able to do that. On the P5, the trans is so stubborn, it won't go into the wrong gear at inappropriate revs or speeds.

That vice/virtue thing, I suppose.

I think that is the keyword: "sustained". I read somewhere (Mercedes Benz??) that some of their tests make the car run at max RPMs continuously for 1-2 days (24hr-48hr) and until then they start having engine anomalies (i.e. f&*%$d up rings, minor deformed pistons), something crazy like that, so 10 seconds at 7500 won't do anything at all even to a cheaper MZR engine.
 
yeah at high revs if somethings gonna go I'd expect it to be rod bearings so you'd hear banging that gets louder as you rev.... ask me how I know... lol.

I was personally worried about valve float, although if that occured, I think I would've heard some really ugly noises.

I've done that sort of things in cars I've had in the past and there usually isn't any damage.

It's been a few year since I've owned a manual tranny, god I miss it!!

ahh.

7500RPM is probably no biggie for a quick second in an engine as well balanced as our 2.3. 9000RPM would have been an issue I bet.
 
I feel that if you damaged it, you would have noticed it by now.

Also, with the factory tach being slow to respond, as well as slightly inaccurate, who knows what RPM your engine saw. Although if you wanted to, you could do some math, if you know your speed and gear at the time, and see what range of RPMs were possible.

This topic makes me jealous, as it makes me wish mine was a 5spd MT.
