I recently got a Oneplus One and the unit will now download and read incoming messages. Unless it's an emoji, it does not translate emoji.

My Nexus 5 updated to Lollipop and the unit actually downloaded previous messages. Still need to confirm whether it will receive texts while driving.

My HTC 510 desire downloads text messages and emails, reads them out while driving and allows me to reply with a set menu of answers.

Its on 4.4.3 kk.

Not sure if it will work long term, time will tell.

I have an ATT Galaxy S4 and I finally received the update from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 and low and behold the text messages started working again, even though I probably had hundreds of old text messages saved in my phone. I'm not really expecting it to last though, and will update when the text message function stops working.

Just wanted to update to say that the SMS function is still working in my car, and it's been over a month. Maybe the phone and car are finally playing nice?

Am I correct in my thinking that SMS is still a "no-go" with IOS and the new system in the 3 & 6 and thus that issue won't be resolved in the '16 CX-5?

I hate to say it but probably so. It's possible that an update put out by Apple may resolve the issue, if only temporarily, but I wouldn't count on a fix from Mazda.

I'm running a Samsung Galaxy S4 (Verizon) w/ Android 4.4.2. As long as I don't have ANY MMS messages it works fine. If I have any MMS messages on the phone, I get the failure to download message. Bluetooth phone, audio streaming and Pandora all work fine.

I'm glad to have found your posting; it has saved me from many long hours of frustration. Up until yesterday messages had been downloading just fine. Then I got the failure to download message, try again later. Later, the same thing. I tried unpairing and re-pairing the phone. Nothing worked until I saw your posting in which you said MMS messages was the cause in your case. As soon as I deleted the one MMS message on my phone, the messages started downloading just fine. Thank you so much.

OK... I've run the gambit since I bought my CX-5 in August of 13. It's a 14 GT with the Tech Package. I had a Samsung Nexus which did work and then a Samsung Galaxy S4 for 2 years. It sort of worked until a major VZW update. I've had Mazda replace the BT unit twice since then. It works.... slowly for a few months then just decides to stop. As chance had it; my S4 was acting up way too often and I had done multiple resets on it and even ripped out the ROM and installed a Virgin ROM from Google. Still no dice so I called Mazda again and had them order another BT module. While waiting for it to come in; I bought a Lumia 640 on Cricket. I began using this as my daily driver phone. The phone is NOT on Mazda's supported device list. It's a good thing! Cortana handles texts like a phone call. She reads my texts out to me and asks me if I want to reply and then sends them along. Once done; the "call" disconnects. It's a MUCH, MUCH more robust and 100% effective way of doing it. So while I am no longer using an Android device; I can tell you that a Windows Phone handles texts by circumventing the bad Mazda system. They Installed the new BT module and it still functions perfectly via Cortana and I don't need to prune my message list at all.

On Android: It's as other's have stated; clear ALL the texts out because the Mazda HF system wants to download ALL of the messages.

I haven't been back to this thread in a while, but I'm currently using a Galaxy S6 edge running 5.0.2 and the text messaging feature has worked for me since I got the phone back in April, with hundreds of messages on the phone plus MMS. I don't know why it suddenly started working reliably for me but I'll take it.
