Do you use/like Auto mode for the AC(and heat?)

I just set it to 70 and let it handle the rest. Definitely blasts on full when I start because it's trying to reach 70. It calms down pretty quickly though unless there's a heat wave.

I do the same. Tried turning it down on the way home tonight just for grins. The lowest it would let me go on my '17 was 65, not 60.

Even Mazda realized no human can survive in the car at Auto-60 degrees for more then 20 minutes... [emoji23]

The '17 will go to 60 just like before. But like most of you, I just set it to auto on the day I picked it up and only thing I ever adjust is the "thermostat" up or down a little if it's a bit too hot or cold, winter or summer. It's just like your house thermostat.

I hardly use Auto mode because I don't like the fan blasting at full speed for it to achieve the set temperature. Having said that, on a hot day and once desired temperature is reached I'll probably try setting it back to Auto. It's really not necessary as I am changeable and like to adjust the ventilation manually.

That means its a gradual cooling of your CX-5 if you don't want fan blasting (auto mode) at full speed... longer time to achieve desired comfort level right (uhm)

My experience from this morning confirmed others comments, the auto dial setting does go down to 60 degrees, not 65 as I had previously thought. My bad. However, as I was tinkering with the different settings, I did happen to notice that the auto settings appear to be working in manual mode as well (Auto light on dial was OFF). It was hovering around the low 50s this morning so I only wanted fresh air coming in through the ventilation system. I turned auto off, temp down to 60 and AC off. Blowing in cool outside air as expected. However, if I rotated the dial upwards to 75 degrees, the air direction switched to feet and the temp rose to start pumping in warm air to the cabin. I understand the temp rising, but changing the airflow direction also? Is this the way it is supposed to work? Is there really no true 'manual' mode (other than 'manually' turning the dials and adjusting the fan controls)?

Yeah that was the one thing I didn't like either. So when I want to have it at 62, my wife turns it up to 80, and all of sudden it changes to feet only. Like no, I still want it on our faces, just the temp difference. Not sure if it has to do with something about hot air rising but either way. But yeah, that's how it is suppose to work for some reason.

Should be working in full manual mode when the auto function is switched off

I think there are some laws of physics involved here with the dueling climate zones. Unless there is a partition, the air will mingle. Maybe if the differential in commanded temperature is too great, Mazda tries to limit the air to the vents that exert more influence one of the occupants.

When in auto mode, the system is controlled by the computer.

When you make any single adjustment, other than cancelling A/C or controlling recirculationyou are out of full auto mode but any control that you haven't manually adjusted is still automatically controlled.

For example: you're in auto mode and adjust the temp, but it's cool outside and don't need A/C so you hit the A/C button so that it does not engage. Fan speed, air positioning, air temperature mixture are all still auto controlled.

Let's say you then adjust the fan level because it's too noisy or something but you like the cool temps out of the vent. When you adjust the fan speed the auto light goes out but the air mixture and vent positions are still automatically controlled.

If you're in full auto and want to make sure the air stays blowing out of the dash so you adjust the vent positions the air mixture and fan speed are still automatically controlled (until you manually adjust the fan speed).

Once you make one adjustment to a control, for example the vents or fan speed, that control does not revert back to auto until you go full auto mode again by pushing the auto button.

This is typical of other Auto climate control systems I've had in other cars.

Yes, thanks! First time with climate control and Studum's explanation of how the system works is NOT in the owner's manual. I find so much useful information on this forum. Thanks to all who share with the rest of us who are new to Mazda. Looking forward to many happy years of ownership.
