Do you REMEMBER when you FIRST got your MSP?

im not going to lie, i didnt know what i was buying at first i just liked the look of the car and i wasnt into boost or anything at the time and now i am.

Same here. I had no clue what I had until I found this forum about 1 1/2 years later. However, I did notice that I never saw another MSP around. To this day, my MSP is the only one I have seen in person.

lol didn't want the test mule that you grinded the piss out of 2nd in?
LOL, hell no! Not only that, but I noticed a few scratches on the test-drive-MSP's rear lip after I'd finished the test drive and was looking the car over more closely. The titanium in the back didn't have a single mark.

im not going to lie, i didnt know what i was buying at first i just liked the look of the car and i wasnt into boost or anything at the time and now i am.
I didn't have a clue either! I had only the vaguest concept of how boost applications worked -- at the time, I figured that buying my MSP would be both fun and educational, heh.

I'll try to keep this short.

Before I wrecked my first car, I had no intention of ever driving a Mazda. I always thought RX-7's were cool but that was about it. So one day I left high school early to go visit my dying grandmother in the hospital. It was raining and I was driving on a road I had never been on before in my lowered 1998 Nissan 200sx SE (great first car). So as I came to the crest of a hill I noticed at the bottom the road made a 90 degree turn (no joke) onto a bridge...so naturally I slammed the brakes and slid right into the bridge hahaha...

So once the insurance declared my car as totaled...we still fixed it anyway, but my dad went searching for my next car. He goes to auto auctions for his job so it's always easy to find cars. So one day he calls me up saying he saw this neat looking Protege with a badge that read "MP3". Of course I'm thinking (uh no thanks) but I looked it up on google and that changed my mind. So he brought it home and I was in love at first sight. Such a fun car, but I really wanted more power. Eventually I found out about a turbocharged version and new I had to have it. After years of searching (again no joke), I had already sold off the MP3 and bought a Spec V since that was the 2nd car on my wish list below the MSP. My dad had seen plenty of MSP's at auctions but they were all ratted out. FINALLY, he gave me a call one day saying I would not believe what he found. A blue MSP with no paintwork, 8900 miles on the odometer, and completely stock looking except for a random muffler welded on.

So he brought it home (this was around August 08) and I was already running around the house in circles. Well slowly I discovered problem after problem with the car...and still to this day I continue to find and fix more issues that were mostly caused by the previous owner. But somehow...I still love the car. It's a love hate relationship.

Had to call all over florida to find my spicy orange. Ended up getting a call at 8am from a dealership in Naples FL saying he JUST got a spicy in. Turns out someone else got a deposit on it first.....but then it fell through. Drove it home the next day. Payed damn near 20k for it ><. Was when they had just come out though and the dealer wouldnt budge an inch on the price. Sucked i only got 2500 trade-in for my 96 z28 =(.

I had a bug-eyed Subaru 2.5 RS and I was coming to the end of the lease. Actually, I was approaching the mileage limit on the lease...

I wanted something for under 20K and had narrowed it down to the SRT-4, the SE-R Spec V and the MSP. The SRT-4 was out because it was a domestic and I couldn't stomach getting in the car and having Dodge emblem staring at me. The MSP beat out the Spec V because it was turboed and I figured I could just up the boost if I wanted more power (LOL. Yah, right...).

I found two MSP's in my area via Auto Trader, one titanium and the other laser blue. I went after the titanium first, but it had been sold two days prior. I went back home and called the dealership with the laser blue. They advised they still had it. I was going to sleep on it, but I was kind anxious, so I drove out to that dealership that same night.

It was pristine w/ 26K on the odo. The only obvious mod was a boost gauge. It wasn't in the showroom, it was back in one of the garages. Turns out they had literally just gotten it in. The dealer started it up and I almost wet myself. The exhaust note was unreal (I found out later that this was because the car was completely catless... o.O). I had done plenty of research and told him I wanted it. He took me over to the finance section where I was informed that someone else had already come to look at the car and had "dibs". They had gone home to sleep on it. I was crushed. He then informed me that he had implored the other guy to put a deposit down to hold the car, but the other guy refused. I wrote him a check for $1500.00 to hold the car and start the financing paperwork. He called me the next day to advise that he had secured financing and I could come fill everything out and take the car...

As I'm in his office filling out forms, the finance guy's assistant comes in and states that the other guy had returned to buy the car. The finance guy replies, "I told him to leave a deposit." He asks me to hold on while he goes out to break the bad news to him. The other guy was PISSED and left in a huff.

Turns out the other guy was local, and a member of the same car club I joined. :D We knew each other for months before we each realized who the other person was. At a meet, he circled my car, and after noting the exhaust, asked if I had bought it at X dealership. I told him "Yeah", and he told me that he was the guy that was trying to buy it. LOL. Small world. He had bought a 3 sedan instead, and has since traded up to a MS3.

A few months later, I took it in for service (I don't remember what for), and the repair guy asked me when I bought it. I told him and he replied that he knew the guy that had traded it in. He said the guy kept it pristine; that he never raced it or anything. When it did leave the garage he totally babied it. I thought that was pretty damned awesome...

So I was at a-school jan 04. (where you make petty officer in the military) and I was sick and tired of driving my jacked up truck everywhere. So I drove 45 minutes down the road to VA beach. So i found her.........04 sti. When you are young in the military you can buy anything and you most try. So i got approved and everything in 3 days. It was late on the third night and i justy got done at the credit union, i give the dealership a call. They cut out for the night but come down after school tomarrow and he would finallize. So I got out of class grabbed my buddy to drive the truck back and hit the road. I get there and she was gone. I had a loan for 18 ready to go. So I look in the garage and there she was. Out back of the garage was a nice blue slorty car? I thought a new stock came in. Now time to go buy my STI. I go talk to dave the manager well, it turns out there is a jack ass who just signed papers on it as I pulled in and the dealership said sorry we sold it out from under you. and " he had a trade in too". I asked what it was. Well that blue protege outback was the answer. So I walkewd out and my buddy was already looking at it. I had no idea what it was but neither did he. So he explains and i looked. I liked so I went in to ask to drive it and dave who knew he messed up justy threw me the keys and told me to go. No plates nothing. I drove it and fell in love. So i went back. he was still finishing up the sti sell and I started talking to him. He could only find model ex, dx, and lx. So he told me 12,999 for the 01 "lx" It had only 1,200 miles on it. the guy bought it and parked it for 3 years while he deployed but was getting stationed in maine so he wanted awd. So I went in and offered 11,000 and all i wanted was a synthetic flush. No cleaning nothing, hell it still had the mcdonalds fries in the back seat with ice still in coke in the cup holder. That took it. Signed and left. Then the next weekend i came back for the fluid flush the service manager told me how pissed dave was and he got yelled at for selling that car that low, "they had no idea what they had". The guy got 11,250 trade cause we had talked after I signed. Funny they were all wiorried about the one sale they got screwed on the other.

I bought my MSP because I couldn't afford a Civic SI. VTEC > Turbo.

jk.

I always wanted the MSP, it's just that whenever it was time for me to buy a car, there was never one for sale. In the summer, I was searching around for a nice 2.7T 6sp manual Audi Allroad and some Subaru Legacies. I was finally set on buying a certain Allroad. I was so excited to pick it up, that I went on craigslist at 6am in the morning to look at the car again, and the my luck there was a MSP that was just posted. I was like ****, just my luck.

I called the guy right then and there, and he was suprised. I got my friend to drive me that morning, and paid for the thing after some negotiating. $7,800 with 12,400 miles and no taxes because he "donated" the vehicle to me.

That was my summer of 09.

I had a 5spd 97 626. I was headed to my brother-in-law's to link 4 xboxes together and rock out Halo 2 right after it was released, so we are talking November '04. Light turned green and I proceeded forward as some highschool girl driving 2 toddlers back home tried to beat the turn and removed the front end of said 626. So then I was in the market for a new/used car. I spent a little time looking around online at carmaxes for different cars. I knew of the P5 and the MP3, but had never heard about the MSP. So I had a list of cars to look at, none were higher priority over any other. I just wanted to drive several and then think about it. I really liked my 626 actually and thought about just replacing that. So I am walking around the lot with my wife and come across a Sunlight Silver MSP. My wife says, "wow that's a pretty car" and I am like "yes, yes it is. Let's drive this one first" Sales guy gets the keys and he has to drive it outside the gate, CArmax policy. SO we are in the car riding through the lot, guy sucks with a MT, but you could hear that slight whistle. My wife is "what is that, sounds like a jet" I smile and say "that's my turbo". We get out and I get the wheel in hand. I take off and make 2 turns and say that I am takign this car. But I still finished the test drive which consisted of a hilly curvy road with no traffic and then a straight length of highway before pulling back into the dealership. I cannot just sign then though, even though someone else was looking at the car right after us. Went home and did my research. Went back on Saturday and qualified for financing. It was $14.9K and had 11K on the odo. I drove her home and imediately found an Injen and Kartboy exhaust hangers the first day. Buddy of mine used to be on this site with a panda P5 told me about it and I've been here since. I love my car even with Mazdas quirks. I truly believe any problems I've had have been my responsibility. I broke the diff on the 22nd run during an autox ddp, spun bearings later and blew up 3rd gear after that. Sure the parts weren't the most amazing quality but I drive the car hard on many occasions and even autox occasionally. I still love it and plan on keeping it hopefully a lot longer.

I had just paid to fix my a/c in my other boosted Mazda product. It stopped working after driving 2 blocks. So after going back for a total refund, I drove up the road to the Mazda dealer and looked at test drove my soon to be MSP. I told the dealer that I would think about it overnight and be back first thing in the morning if I decide yes. The rest is history and it's been a great car that has only seen the dealer one time for the flash and bushings.

Many of you know I've been around these forums for a long time. My first car was a 2000 ES which I did a Sport20 body conversion to, among a host of other mods. Unfortunately, I went through engines faster than oil changes with that car. To be honest it was a series of very unfortunate events, but I attribute to the fact that a car is worth only as much as the sum of all its parts, and while many parts were upgraded, not all of them were and it ultimately rendered the car useless. I was devastated to let it go. I had a ton of time and money in the car and to let it go killed me.

So I started looking for my next ride. I had about $10k in the bank between savings and the sale of my old Protege, and I was considering taking a loan to get something a little nicer. At the time I had a very good steady job, out of college, ect ect. I test drove a G35, G37, and an Acura TL Type-S. The Acura was my first choice, but at $22k it was a bit of a stretch for me.

So I did what every geek does and I made a list of every car I'd consider from $5000 - $20000. It included used Audi S4s to MS6s and everything in-between. I test drove a ton of them, but left feeling a little empty. The were great cars, but they didn't have that "feel" (you all know what I'm talking about). Frankly, they were all too heavy...

What I finally realized, sitting in my living room one day, was that I didn't want another car back - I wanted MY car back. So I went onto Cars.com and I looked up MSPs. I wanted a Titanium, low mileage, no mods. I learned my lesson with modifying cars before and wasn't gonna make that mistake again... So I found one in Norfolk, VA and was really excited. it had 62k on the clock and they wanted $11k for it. I was ready to go when the dealership called me back and said they sold it 2 days prior. Idiots...

So back to the search. I found another on in Plano, Texas. One owner, garage kept, had Tokico Illuminas and a Vibrant exhaust. 51k on the odometer and $9,500. I talked to the owner a couple of times and it seemed more like he was interviewing me to see if I was going to be a suitable buyer for the car. THAT was a good sign. The last step was having one of my father's colleagues in the area go check out the car for us (the guy was a gearhead) and the report back was: "If you don't buy this car, I will."

So I sent the guy a $500 deposit (didn't even negotiate the price), flew to Texas with my dad and drove the car home. Left Friday night and arrived in MD on Sunday morning, 1,410 miles later. Only complaint on the way back was an out-of-balance front left wheel making life slightly uncomfortable. Good news was, we averaged 69.8 MPH and 30.9 MPG.

Here's the first picture after I got MSP #1460 aka "Buzzy" home:

Since then, he's got some small rock chips in the hood, and has had the normal maintenance items to attend to, but otherwise, has been a dream to own...

...So I went in and offered 11,000 and all i wanted was a synthetic flush. No cleaning nothing, hell it still had the mcdonalds fries in the back seat with ice still in coke in the cup holder. That took it. Signed and left...

LOL. That's awesome...

There's some damn good stories on here. Just out of curiosity, how many of you have any regrets about buying an MSP?

I know I do. Don't get me wrong. I LOVED my car. It was loads of fun, and I was happy as hell to be a 20 year old with a brand new car that I paid for entirely on my own. However, looking back, if I had waited a year or so and saw all the issues people were having with them, I probably would have just kept driving to the Mini dealership, or sucked it up and spent the extra money on a bug-eye WRX wagon.

The one thing I have ZERO regrets about was getting involved in this community all those years ago. back in '04-'06, the Florida Mazda scene was BIG, and we were setting up some awesome meets and getting to know a lot of very cool people.

I just know that the day I traded in my MSP for my S2000 was pure bliss on so many levels.

^ None whatsoever. I wish it had twice the horsepower, but I have no regrets; SCC made it abunduntly clear that it was no stoplight samurai. I knew that going in...

Yeah I have had chances to get rid of the car, but I never follow through. No matter what car it is I'm looking at buying I can't part with her. I was going to sell it and come out a little ahead and buy a 04+ GTO but I just couldn't do it, something about a car this light, this fun, and with very little driver intervention (ie. DSC, TSC) makes me turn everything down. I can't imagine a funner car to take these TN mountain roads in, except maybe an Elise, but that's above my debt ceiling, lol.

Now when she's paid off at the end of next year I will be buying another "toy" (MSM), but I'll love her the same. :)

i have small moments of regret every now and then, especially lately

Fate found me this car!!! I was in the market for a GTI VR6 and had test drove several, Then all of a sudden this MSP popped up on one of my searches and I fell in love. The next day I called the dealer it was at and it "had been sold" My heart sunk. Abount a month later another Spicy MSP popped up and I immediatly went to see it. Turns out that it's the same car I originally wanted!!! It was traded to the dealer I was currently at....
So here's that story...
I drove up to this dealer which turned out to be an exotic dealership, They only had GT3, Bentley, RR, Lambo ect I thought I had walked into he wrong place not expecting a MSP to be in that place. Turns out they bought the MSP while picking up several other high end cars, and had planned to add the MSP into a $100,000 + car sale as bonus!! Basically "thanks for buying this expensive ass car here's a freebee for your grandkid!!" LOL

Dang, that'd be a sweet bonus! Haha, mine broke about as often as a Ferrari, but thankfully cost far less to fix.
