Do you guys use engine braking?

Do you use engine braking?

  • I use it religiously! Plus, shifting is fun!

  • I don't use it at all. Brakes are cheaper than clutches.

(laugh) I have a SOLUTION!

Take your car to 60 mph and leave it in gear then shut off the engine!! (laugh)

If your car slows down more than it does on and in gear.. then it's not using any gas

if your car slows down a bit less, then that extraforce must come from somewhere... (gas?)

BTW i hold no responciblity for this comment (rockon)

Please tell me this was in jest.

I always downshift. It's not an issue of which will cost you more, brakes or a clutch, because a clutch will last 50,000k+ with the right owner and with downshifting. If you don't downshift and soak up everything with the brakes, you'll be getting 10-20k out of them, maybe. Cost is about the same.

Hey your about 40 miles from me.

Here are some facts for you brainiacs, the engine is the one that uses gas , there fore when you go from 2500rpm in 6th to 3200rpm in 5th and the from 2500rpm in 5th to 3300rpm in 4th and so on the engine starts spinning faster therefore it consumes more gas...how much?? who knows and honestly who cares , I dont believe you will notice . I have to say that unless you go from 6th gear to 2nd as a way of slowing down I believe engine braking is the way to go .

So instead of not only increasing the RPMs when slowing, but the fact that you are still at 2500-4000 RPMs instead of the idle speeds of 1000ish and using THAT much less gas.

to put it simply, fuel and timing maps are based on RPM and load. no load = basically no fuel, regardless of RPM until you get up to real high RPM levels which you shouldn't really be downshifting into. if you're really interested in what ECUs do with fuel at different loads and under different conditions check out these subforums http://forums.evolutionm.net/forumdisplay.php?f=98

I engine brake within reason. I'll usually take it down to 3rd or 2nd gear before applying the actual brakes. I once knew a guy that wouldn't go near the brake peddle until he was in first.
