what does your insurance policy clasify it as? there is your black and white answer

I love my ms3 but a sports car has two doors manuel transmission and rear or all wheel drive. Doesn't mean we cant out accelerate, handle and brake better than alot of sports cars, I just feel our car is way to versatile to be labled a sports car. It should a whatever you need it to be car.

No, I HAVE A TRUE SPORTS CAR!

jk jk lol.

Its not a sports car by definition but its a verry effin awesome car none the less.

I had this same debate when I owned an SRT-4...Those cars are Compact 4 cylinders with balls.

There's not a clear cut and dry definition of what a sports car is or is not. All those saying its not so matter of factly are neither wrong nor right it’s only your opinion so don’t try and make it sound like its fact. I notice a lot of people are pulling the “it’s a 5dr hatch / wagon it can’t be a sports car” argument. To me that’s just a cope out candy ass excuse. Now if we’re taking performance criteria then yeah I can understand but we don’t live in the 60’s anymore things have changed. Just because I car is light weight is low to the ground, is RWD, etc, etc. doesn’t mean s***! Performance / actions speak for what something is. All this “well it’s a wagon” it can’t be a sports car crap is just plain dumb IMO. With this same agrument you can have a "wagon" run 0-60 in 3.4 secs the 1/4 in 11.0 secs the skip pad 1.2 g' the slalom @75mph and run "The Ring" in 7:22 but it's a "wagon" so it's just a wagon it can't be a sports car because well it doesn't look like a "sports car" or it's not RWD, please...

nope, all that means its that is a really fast wagon or sportwagon if we're being technical (and one I'd love to own). Still not a sports car. Sorry. :)

Despite the RS6 being twice as powerful than the S2000CR and utterly destroying it in a straight line, guess which one of these is a sports car and which one is not.

Thing is, I'd rather have the RS6 but that still doesn't make it a sports car.

+1 for Donas64 argument. I think it has to do more with the intention of the car when it is designed/built. Saying "I want to make a sports car" vs "I want to make X car sporty/fast"

I think the speed3 is a fun, reliable, affordable, and practical hatchback. For some reason I can't believe my speed3 is also cheaper to insure than my 06 prius which is fully paid off; not by much, about $50 or so a year, but cheaper nontheless.

to confuse the issue even more---in the sep. 2008 issue of motor trend 2009-2010 new cars ratings and reviews. they do not call ANY car a "sports car" they are called coupes as a body type!! or on some a convertable. the MS3 is called a hatch. according to motor trend, sports cars do not excist!!

There's nothing about the definition of a "sports car" that says it has to be fast. Typically they're agile, but not fast. Miata, S2000, old Triumph TRs, MGBs, Sunbeam, AC, various Jags, Fiats, etc are sports cars.

You can call the MS3 an airplane. It has a wing and a cockpit... You can fill it with dirt and call it a truck. Doesn't make it either one.

(lol)(iagree)

i am under the impression that a sports car would more so be a type of body style....like ....hatch...minivan...truck. I don't believe performance really has anything to do with it. now if you are asking if the MS3 is a performance car.......thats a different animal. I believe that it is geared toward performance making it a performance car.

there is no undisputable definition for it... it all depends on each person's own view of it, hence the difference in opinions on the subject and variance in the poll.

at first thought, i'd be slightly hesitant to put it as a "true" sports car, main reason being that it is built from the platform of an econo-hatch. it's front wheel drive. it has just 4 cylinders and a pretty small displacement. it looks pretty tame, with only small exterior cues and some bigger rims setting it apart from a basic 3 hatch.

that being said, look at what it does. its suspension grips the road pretty nicely, keeps you planted in corners very well, and even has traction control and DSC to further bolster handling. the powerplant is raw, puts out 263 hp and 280 lb-ft to the crank, and throws you to the back of your seat when you get around 3k rpm and into full boost. it has enough power to require the reduction of it through the first 2 gears, and even so, you can still rip the tires, not to mention it's got enough torque stear to make your head crack the driver's side window if you're not ready for it. it's stout brakes will bring you to 0 pretty quickly and with good feel.

maybe hot rod is a better term for it. when you look at the roots of that term, its more about budget speed, not really technological prowess, even though it still lacks the generic traits of a "hot rod."

my final verdict: yes, i think it should be considered a true sports car. my car does everything that any other sports car is intended to do well, and i dont think i can deny it that classification just because it it doesnt look fast or because it can do things that other sports cars can't (like fit normal sized people in the back seat, provide room for more than one 30-pack in the trunk, lets me sit in it without my head being permanently wedged against the roof, and lets me average 26mpg in regular driving and 30 on the highway)

im sold.

HOW ARE YOU GETTING 26 MPG IN "REGULAR" DRIVING? (boom05)

Modified Mag - The Mazdaspeed 3 catapults this muscular little 5-door hatchback to the exalted position of the most powerful FWD production vehicle ever built.

sounds pretty sporty to me
