DIY Custom FMIC Installation

as for the turkey, i would try taking out the middle spring in the bov, thats wat u had to do in my type s, and ive heard the type rs is even more stiff, so try that and let us know!

Smork-None, after buying the auctions in the first post and then the 4 reducers, i have probably 3-4 bends left, and all 4 of the straight pipes are left over, along with the cut off pieces. Now that i think about it, all the pipes use(other than bov flange) are bends.

msp4cody-yea man i thought about that today, i took the bov apart to check the diaphram and actually thought about taking the middle spring out. i'm definitely going to try that tomorrow.

Pics coming as we speak

Here are the pics, have some more i might add later. If ya'll have any requests i'll try to get what you want(with out taking the bumper off lol). Let me know what ya'll think.

Let me know what you guys think, these pics are from last night. Today i went and cleaned up a few areas(hoses, vacuum lines) and changed the angle of the SRI slightly, but still looks basically the same and should give ya'll an idea.

No i have some left over.

Here's a pic that may help some of you i've got PM's from. the coupler at the right of the pic is where the ~110* pipe going down and a 90* pipe connect. I had to bend an a/c line about half an inch(and yes, my a/c still works :))

Pic of the slightly repositioned sri and i shortened the coolant resovoir, bov vacuum, and pcv hoses/rerouted them.

Looks nice, although your couplers look like they're a little stressed/weak(probably the JDM quality). I might do something like this in the future. (thumb)

Thanks bud. Yea i know what you're saying. That may be something that i'll do in the future is get a little better couplers. The reducers are actually very stout/good quality, it's just the couplers that could be improved.

Quick question to you guys with fmic's already. After driving and the engine is at normal temp, how hot do ya'lls intercoolers get? Mine is staying pretty damn cold. I might put a temp gun tomorrow after driving it a little, i'm just curious of what temps ya'lls are running. I know there are a lot of factors that affect it and I'm sure it depends on the ambiet temp also, just give me an idea.

This has to be the cleanest home/custom FMIC I've seen to date. I have the hi-boost kit, but I'm thinking about going with a bigger intercooler and running the pipes differently so I can also put in the P5 radiator. This all of course would happen when I put in a forged motor and go for higher HP...may have to follow this path with a different IC core...

AlienInv8tr-The hotside from the turbo down to the tow ring in pass. fender was a b****. Required a lot of cutting of the pipes(little bit, check it, go back and do a little more etc). trying to find the right angles for the turbo down to the tow ring/fender was a little tough too. but after that, from there to the fmic back up to the bov was not bad at all. If you'd like you can come check it out one day, you're about 5 mins from me.

Shoot, I didnt even pay attention to it being you, sweet, right near me. I might take you up on seeing it one day. The pics look really clean, I'd be interested in taking a closer look. What do you think the biggest hurdle was in the project? Just routing around existing lines, or more? Definitely looks clean though.
OT - were you on Glenwood on tues. night? I saw a silver msp parked near Sushi Blues, didnt look too close though cuz I was hungry.

lisevolution-Thanks man, i really appreciate it. It might have taken me a while(10 hours) and two nights working after work, but i wanted to make sure it looked neat/organized. I will do the same as you in the future if i plan to mod anymore or if this intercooler becomes a restriction, i will buy a better core and the piping will already be there.

alieninv8r-the hardest part was the hot side. Once i started doing it, it wasnt too bad. It took more thinking/planning than anything. the cold side was a breeze thought. let me know if you want to check it out one day. No man taht wont me tuesday, i was just finishing this thing up then.

msp4cody-thanks for the advice on the inner spring on the rs bov, i took it out and 75% of the turkey is gone, i'm just fine tunning it now. How do i know if i have it adjusted too soft to were it leaks boost? should i be able to get a good idea in neatral with reving it up? I dont have a boost gauge, my girlfriend is getting me one for xmas hopefully though. Also, when in neatral and i rev it up, close the tb, the bov blows off, and keeps blowing for about 3-5 secs untill its basically all the way closed. This sound normal. Any that you could tell me to look for would be great. Thanks

Thanks everyone

Derrick

EXCELLENT WORK!

With a little time and effort you saved several hundred dollars, built a unique/custom setup for your car that nobody else has, and didn't get dicked out of your hard earned money when it wasn't necessary. To me, doing projects like this are what define modifying a car and being an enthusiast. Building components such as an exhaust, IC piping, Air intake and so on are within the means of most who would have to install them anyways.

yea doing it in neutral should be fine thats what i did. mine also whiltles after it blows off for a couple seconds, and i have had no problems, just adjust it to where it will close up when you rev it and you should not leak, im glad the spring trick worked forya good luck!

Zenprotege-thanks. i believe in doing projects like this to save money, and in the long run get basically the same results as the $500-$800 more kits. there's also a sense of accomplishment after being finished and the product is good(especially when midway through you're stressing out, it's late, you're tired...:)).

msp4cody-thanks for all the info. i'm still fine tuning mine. I get slight turkey now(like 1 goble haha) or when the turbo just barely spools and the bov doesnt really open much at all. i like the sound now, so i might leave it there or maybe i'll play with it some more, who knows.

Thanks again guys

I might have to try that spring trick on my RS... I have it set as loose as possible and the second I blow-off from being in boost I get a slight bit of turkey then the whoosh. I'll try this tomorrow and see if it works for me as well
