Distributor assembly broken!?!

Ok guys, here is the scoop. The 'rents came to town over the weekend in my mom's '95 MX-6, 2.0 L. It has 140,000 on it and had a timing belt at 90,000. We drove it around town Saturday night, no probs. They went to leave yesterday and hit the key; it would crank over, but never fire. Tried jumping it in the hopes that maybe it was a weak battery, but to no avail. Pulled a plug wire and cranked it and it was throwing spark. So, we were stumped. Had it towed to a shop. I let them take my MSP home the 150 miles since I don't really need a car right now. The shop called today and says that it is a broken Distributor Assembly. $1400 in repairs. $7XX just for the assembly. This sound right?

To me it makes sense, seeing as the car is 14 years old, but I have never heard of anything like that. Has anyone experienced this before? (scratch)

you should tell your mechanic to **** off. At MOST, the distributor itself should cost around $300 (AT MOST!)

What's even better is that you can change the disty yourself. There are only two positions the rotor can be in, and still bolt back to the cylinder head. From there, just match up the wires in their corresponding positions, and whala!

Backtrack, though. If you're getting spark, it's most likely not the distributor. Check your fuel system.

Thats kinda what I figured...but dad is in charge of the repair, his money. If the thing was broke, you would think it wouldn't shoot a spark in the first place.

We thought a fuel pump seemed more in line.

try this: shoot some starting fluid into the cylinders, and go for it. If it starts from the fluid, then dies, your disty is okay.

Tried it in the intake...nuthin. Tis all good though, it went home today, I drove it and it runs fine. Just cost alot. Supposedly the distributor assembly had to come directly from Mazda-no one anywhere had one.

Really though, I am just waiting for the day that it is mine....1 owner, nervous-mom-driven car=perfect racecar platform.

Anyone ever turn one into a track car....with a spool?
