Did Volvo just seal the combustion engine's fate?

And yet everyone is thinking we will all be driving electric cars before 2030.

I saw somewhere that Mazda thinks we'll be driving combustion engines in 2050*. I'd say they are betting the company.

* I hope it wasn't this thread where I saw it. :)

It says that in the article I linked to. They surely are going their own way haha.

Mazda has little to no resources for alternative fuel. Imagine how big flop Mirai and Honda Clarity were. Mazda can't afford these. If they can bring in 25% better mpg in next generation. They will beat hybrids bar Niro.
Every morning my drive which is in sweet spot for skyactiv gives me 33 mpg. I don't baby it either. Even a 20% rise on this would be stellar.

And 50 years ago everyone thought we'd all have flying cars by now and we'd have hotels in space and be visiting other planets.

I know Mazda partnered with Toyota for a while trading some of their skyactiv tech for Toyota's ICE/Electric drivetrain integration tech. I think Mazda needs to dip their toe in the water here, waiting until electrified cars have a bigger market-share to develop internal expertise with electrified drivetrains is a mistake IMO. France, Britain, India and soon China, mandating electric/hybrid vehicles in the near future is too big a market to ignore. I think they risk becoming irrelevant.
