im in the market for a car too and i test drove both of them and i personally like the p5 alot more. just feels better to me, like a drivers car. i wont hate on any mazda, but i recommend the p5 over the 3

I can help you.

I bought (2) protege 5's in March. Both where 2002.5 One is Yellow(mine), the other is Red(Wifes). Both are exactly the same. Sportmatic trans, and sunroof. The only option to that it doesn't have is leather. I bought these vehicles at Marina motors in Capitola. Which is by Santa Cruz. Each vehicles where 14,000 out the door with tax and license included.

K so I am going to go with a P5 for sure. Im looking for preferably a 2003, automatic with the step shifting(all P5 autos have this right?), less than 20K miles, cloth interior, most colors are fine but no black, looking for the dark grey/silver color, white, or either blue hopefully. Front and side air bags too, and a moonroof wouldn't be bad but is not necessary. And for speaker/deck wise I will be installing my own so a fancy one is not needed/wanted. Thanks for all your help guys, I hope to be part of this forum (by actually owning one) soon.

Go to autotrader.com
Then search your make, and vehicle. Then year you want, price and search within 300 miles. At this time, there about 15 up for sale. Some are closer than others.
As for the automatics. Some are regular and sportmatic is an option. At least is what I've heard.

All p5 autos for year 02.5+ will have sportmatic. So, a model listed as 02, may or may not have it.
However, I bought mine because it had the sportmatic over my g/f's 02 which didn't and truthfully, I NEVER use it, because it doesn't seem to give all that much control over me just dropping the gas.

BTW -- there is no "dark gray" P5 -- only silver.
