Dealer just quoted me $1050 for timing belt and water pump

i had a timing chain and water pump done on my grand am b4 and it ran me about 900 bux.. anyone know why its soo expensive?

the amount of labor it takes to remove teh water pump.

on the p5, it would almost be easier to pull the engine to change these parts, theres just not alot of room.

factor in that the belt is about 100 bucks, and water pump another 200, 600 in labor is roughly 6ish hours of work for a tech

^ no. I did mine - no too hard. Not compared to removing the engine - i assure you! ;)

Yes, get another quote!

man im glad i got a good buddy whos a mechanic. i had timing belt, water pump, a few new seals and belts, head gasket, new struts and springs and endlinks all installed for 700. i felt i was treated fair for all the work he did. that is a insane price to pay imo. def shop around a few other places.

If you look on ebay you can get the parts for about $130. I know a lot of people in the Toronto area who have done this and have had no problems with the quality of the parts.

my prices were just experiene from working in a dealership in parts. Thats about the average of what it should cost to determine the price he was quoted. obviously its much cheaper to go online, but hes also getting OEM mazda parts.

dealership parts prices are incredibly overpriced, but parts and service is where dealerships make 90% of their money.

Nope he is getting reamed, I was quoted 650 bucks Canadian at the mazda dealership to do timing belt and water pump.

Pat.

i was quoted round a grand for timing belt and water pump.
its a 95 dollar/hr rate and parts alone are almost 200 bucks. if i do seals and other stuff it'll be couple hundred more bucks.

95/hr is insane....most shops charge 50 and i think that is a lil insane....especially when they go by the book hours and not actual...

i got quoted 500 just to change the belts(pc/alt) and the belts were like 40 and it took me an hour....

on side note....out water pumps are 200? really? **** me running

Labour rate varies greatly by where you are. In my area most independant shops are around $80-$90 an hour, dealers are about 10 to 15 more. When I lived in northern Ontario the dealer was $65 or $70. If you go to downtown Toronto some dealers are close to $150 an hour.

i did my timing belt, water pump plugs and re did some turbo tubing... it took me.. about 7 hours to get it apart and back togather but i was taking my sweet ass time.. i work on my car in a shop here on post and i tend to help other people while i do my work...

Protege garage has 60k mile kit that includes all of this for around $650+/- plus some other stuff as well. I found it after searching a bit since I hadn't heard back from Ken. I'll try to find the post or maybe Ken will show up on here with an answer.

1st I am not crazy, but I swear a few years back maybe 2005 or so I had a coupon for a timing belt change at my local dealershup for like $279.

only personal experience I had with a timing belt was a Nissan Pathfinder that I attempted to do myself and quickly backed off after pulling out the radiator, ended up having it done at the dealer for a bit over $300, this was also a few years ago.
