So I bring my car in to the dealer for a p0442 and figure a quick fix would be in order. I dropped it off, went to a parade with the wifey and get a call around 12:30. He says that he is going to have to get me into a loaner because there is way more going on than I thought. He tells me that I have several codes stored in there.

the 442 i originally brought up
an egr code(dont know the code off the top of my head)
a random misfire code
and a VVT code as well.....

Still kinda crappy but no big deal right....? WRONG!

Apparently my warranty wont cover the first two because they are both out of the warranty range on the federal emissions laws. Had i live in cali, or a few other states it would be covered but it's not.

So then i am thinking whatever. no big deal...until he startes telling me that the VVT may not be covered either because I am out of my factory warranty period. I say, oh ok, no biggie, i still have my power train warranty and that should be covered since it is part of the engine. He says, mazda doesnt consider the VVT part of the engine and he has to have someone from mazda come down and look at it monday or tuesday. HOW IS THE VALVE TRAIN NOT PART OF AN ENGINE????????????????

I pulled my warranty book out when i got home and don't think I am going to have to pay for the VVT because it says that " the engine including cylinder block, cylinder head, and all internal lubricated parts" are covered under powertrain. I would consider the valve train a lubricated internal part (uhm)

Anywho...just venting..I hope mazda doesnt become a company i refuse to buy from..........

damn dude...whip out that BS flag bigtime. valves are in the cylinder head mos def

so im guessing that vvt means variable valve timing? unless that has something to do with a computer, then i could see their argument. but if it's some sort of physical component than yea they should fix it

yes vvt means variable valve timing and the kicker to all this is that there is a TSB for this EXACT problem.

TSB

They will cover it. Print out the TSB and give it to them. They can't say no. If they don't...tell them to **** off and go to another dealer.

Yeah they probably don't want to get paid from Mazda do to the warranty work so they want to charge their own rate to do it.

Saying the valve train is not part of the coverage engine parts is laughable but would sever my ties with the dealership at that point.

i have a feeling that the vvt thing will be covered under warranty. I think anybody would have a hard time stating that the valve train is not part of an engine and having that hold up in any argument. The egr and purge are a different story. I just dont get how an egr can be bad already 45k on an un-modded car(except for ms-cai and suspension) The damn egr itself is over 400 bucks + installation...brutal.

Go pick the car up. Now. Do not let them scatter it. Do not authorize any repairs.

Take it to Autozone and get all of your CEL readings. All of them.

If you don't know what they mean, there is a list of them here and we can help you interpret them.

Then, with CEL print-outs in hand, take the car to another Mazdaspeed dealer.

You are being ripped off -- big time. I'd never let that shop under the hood of my car again . . . ever.

Edit: Oops, GoFast, forgot you are a mod. You know all about the codes. Just trying to be helpful. Get that care out of there and take it to another dealer. Best of luck.

tell the stealership GM that you're a mod on this forum, and our total membership is 55,000+. that means a negative review towards them could potentially detract thoooousands of ppl from doing business w/ their stealership. (pow) i bet they start cowering in fear & start approving warranty repairs pdq....

Cars fixed. After a call to mazda cs(which did nothing btw) I talked to the dealer and we went over everything. I showed the tsb and he noticed that there was an updated version and that it does in fact cover me under powertrain. problems all fixed. cost = $0.00

Thanks for the update and the report of good news.

Say, is there a link to all of Mazda's TSB's on our cars? Maybe I missed it here. Would make a good "sticky" if not already done.

i totally agree and I am not sure. I do know that someone posted a link that was supposed to have them but i found that to be incorrect or i just wasnt looking in the right place.

So did they back pedal big time on their stance of charging you for 3 out of the 4 CELs?

Honestly not really...but then again, I didn't really pursue it. I got the call that said my car was done and i could pick it up anytime so, I did just that. They chalked it up to not seeing the updated version of the TSB and I was happy just to have it back and to have $1,200+ still in my pocket.

Wow...that saved a junkload of money for you. Glad to hear it. I'm taking mental notes if I ever bring my car in for CELs. You should start a consultation business :)

lol the best thing ANYONE can do, is to be informed and persistent if they feel like something doesn't add up.
