This was the first i saw regarding how many new CX-9s are being sold:

U.S. auto sales were expected to drop slightly in July as unusually hot weather – and softening demand – kept buyers at home.

General Motors’ sales fell 2 percent, while Ford’s U.S. sales fell 3 percent. Toyota’s sales slipped 1 percent. Volkswagen’s sales fell 8 percent. Honda’s sales rose 4 percent while Nissan’s were up 1 percent.

Bright spots in the industry included two brands with U.S. divisions based in Orange County.

Mazda, with its North American headquarters in Irvine, reported July sales of 27,915 vehicles, a 2.8 percent increase vs. last year. Year-to-date sales through July were 173,269 vehicles. Highlights for Mazda included:

• The CX-5 had its best-ever July with 10,831 vehicles sold, an increase of 13.7 percent over July 2015, and marks the brand’s best month since December.

The reborn Mazda CX-9 recorded its best month since March 2013. CX-9’s 2,243 vehicles sold represent an increase of 41 percent year over year.

Compare Honda Pilot (2016) had 10,803 units sold and Toyota Highlander sold 13,436 units in June 2016.

Funny, because here in Bergen County (NYC metro area) i still have yet to see another new CX-9 on the road....and it's been 2 months!

You can't directly compare the number of units sold--Honda and Toyota will trounce Mazda every time. That's why they use year-over-year numbers.

I find it interesting that the CX-5 had a spike in sales. I wonder what caused that? Are people looking at the new CX-9 and settling for the CX-5?

The same here. I have 2 months now with my CX9 GT and I still don't see any other new CX9 in Mexico city. And Mexico city is a big city with a population of 23 millions!

Also can't judge first month sales. There's still barely any dealer stock yet. My local Mazda dealer has had no more than 2 CX-9's in stock since launch and I'm in a high population northeastern location.

We'll have to see how it shakes out after a few more months when the dealers half a good variety of stock with different trims and colors. I don't doubt that sales will climb pretty well. They'll never approach the best sellers and no one, including Mazda is shooting for that. Like every Mazda, it's for a particular customer, not a one size fits all like the Highlander or Explorer.

I hope they stay under the radar, at least until we buy a CX-9 GT later this fall, lol. As it is, visiting two local dealers, one had 3 CX-9s, and the other 14. When I asked the first dealer about their willingness to move on price, he said something about only having 3 and waiting for more. The 2nd one seemed more open. No surprise, but makes me wonder if mazda is going to keep the supply down and prices up. Still warming up to this pricing model of foreign car companies vs. the american companies like Ford. Bought a f150 last year for something like $8k less than msrp.

Same here in San Diego, CA. I have not seen another CX9 (any trim) on the road beside my GT! On my way to the dealer the other day, I saw one test drive out of the parking lot :-)

I think Mazda might have miscalculated the demand for the Signature's and people's willingness to order one in the color they want and just wait for it rather than have multiple dealers pitch you on a different color. So inventory or lack thereof is has definitely been a issue. If I'm spending over 40K on a vehicle I am going to get it exactly as I want it, not something "close". I know everyone is different on that front but for sure it's what delayed our purchase to August instead of July.

Mazda has been concentrating small portion of the potential car buyers who want much better drivability. Unfortunately most car buyers are looking for a point A to pointy B appliance, and the more features the better! That's why the sales number on Mazda will always be limited, unless they change their philosophy!

Almost 2 months now after I bought my signature, and I only have seen 3. There's one last week that parked right in front of me and noticed that he's got a Louisiana tag. And I don't know about you guys but kinda like it though that there's only a few 2016 CX-9s on the road rather than like the CX-5s. I mean CX-5s are everywhere.

Even the best-selling CX-5 for Mazda is still way below on sales volume of those top-selling compact CUVs such as Honda CR-V、Toyota RAV4、Ford Escape、Nissan Rogue. All of those sold 3 times more than CX-5 in 2015!

I'd see may be one CX-5 per month at most in our area!

In my opinion if the new cx9 would have been released earlier around the same time as the facelifted Pilots and Highlander came out, i am sure you will see higher sales for the cx9.

No disrespect to Pilot and Highlander owners, but they both look pedestrian compared to the new cx9.

Good luck with that. The days where everyone special orders their options are long gone. If there's an unusual option or color you want, be prepared to wait a long time for it.

I see 20+ cx5 every day in MX City. Really. Incredible. I see more cx5 than CRV for sure. and more Mazda 3 than Civic as well. For every Civic I see (and they have a new good one, with turbo), I see 10 mazda3. For real.

I actually like that too, makes the CX-9 silouhette unique. I don't need people to have my car, just dig it! Ours is the only one we've seen, in NYC/NJ.

Sales numbers for August: 1,863
400 less than July, but 6% over August '15, (prev. model). As mentioned above, July '16 was 41% over July '15 (again, prev. model).

Exactly!

I can compare it to my visit to the Hamptons recently. Everyone drove a Rover..I think i must have saw 100 of them in a single day. It becomes boring after a while!

I don't see a single one CX9 on the streets in Mexico city. And boy, this is a huge city (22 million habitants).

I have a Red Soul GT AWD.

My wife see a white one 2 weeks ago.

I only see one Pilot (new generation) and a lot of Pathfinder (every single day). A lot (But we don't know if the Pathfinder is 2014, 2015 or 2016) - Almost no difference.

I suspect that there is a significant number of people (I am among them) who are waiting for 2017 CX-9 to come out (or at the very least, announced) to see if some issues that have been discussed here and elsewhere, have been addressed:

6-way adjustment of the driver's seat;
Support for Apple CarPlay;
Infotainment System instability;
MPG being lower than EPA estimates;
etc.

I would love to see at least a couple of these being addressed in 2017 model before jumping in.

I'm pretty sure there is no more cx9 turbo on streets (at least in MX) because the SPORT and GL trim is not available. There is only GT now.

Regarding the upgrades for next year I can tell you this new cx9 have better MPG compared with the old generation. A full tank of gas in the old one allow me a week of driving. With the new cx9 turbo, I refill my gas tank every 10 - 12 days. Everything depends on how aggressive you drive.

The infotainment reboot issue is present on cx9 and cx5 since a couple of years now. Who knows if they will have a fix soon.

Appe CarPlay / Android Auto will be a nice add-on.

The seat for me is perfect, I or my wife are OK with the current layout. But I understand some drivers will want full 8 way adjustment.

I couple of years ago I've purchased a first model year's car. That was a 2015 Subaru Outback. Loved it... up until around 3000 mile mark when "Low Oil" warning sign came up. Took it to the dealership where they told me that "some oil consumption is expected in these types of vehicles (!)". Long story short, the car burns about a quart of oil every 2000 to 25000 miles, yet they have been giving me a runaround until yesterday, when a judge approved a class-action lawsuit settlement where Subaru agreed to put a new engine in "some" vehicles that had oil-burning issues. The class-action suit also said that Subaru was "unresponsive" to customer complaints and set "an unreasonably high threshold" when testing oil consumption. So... I am looking forward to going into that dealership again and sticking the printout of that class-action ruling to their faces.
I am mentioning this in order to demonstrate that my fear of first model year's cars has some basis to it :). Subaru has since fixed the issue (or so they say). I fully expect that Mazda will fix at least some of the issues that people are complaining about.
By the way, I took a test drive and the seat was comfortable enough for me, I didn't feel the need to adjust it in any way. So, this issue is not high on my personal list. I also didn't feel that AC is in any way inadequate, although it was not a 100 degree day. The constantly crashing infotainment system is a problem though....
