CX-50 Hybrid coming this fall

Full details announced now.

Exciting stuff. Nice looking rig with pretty impressive fuel efficiency numbers, too.

I'll bet the Toyota motor is noisier and less refined than the Mazda Skyactiv. But the price is reasonable.

Sounds like the new red interior option is for the hybrid only. Not sure if I’m reading that correctly though.
That would seem to be correct. Mazda likely wanted to introduce something unique for the Hybrid. It will be available on the non-hybrid the following year.

The CVT makes the hybrid unattractive to me.
From Gemini:

A traditional CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) and an eCVT (electric Continuously Variable Transmission) are both designed to deliver smooth gear changes and improve fuel efficiency, but they achieve this in different ways:
  • CVT: Uses a belt and pulley system to change gear ratios. This can sometimes lead to a feeling of the engine revving without acceleration, which some drivers dislike.
  • eCVT: Found in hybrid vehicles like Toyota Prius, it uses a combination of electric motors, planetary gears, and a single gear ratio to achieve a similar effect to a CVT without the belt. This is generally considered a more robust and reliable design.

Combined HP is 219 but torque is only 163 lb-ft. I find that strange...
This torque is only from the engine. When electric motor and Engine are both in use then it would be more than that. The RAV4 hybrid has the same output as the CX-50 and it does 0-60 in 7.4s, splitting the difference between the Turbo 0-60 and the NA 0-60. That is plenty for a traditional Hybrid.

Are the rear wheels powered only by the electric motor(s)?

My Mazda salesman told me that basically Mazda is going to use the exact same system that RAV4 is using. No details but he also mentioned that after that the new CX5 will be introduced.

It appears the 2025 CX-50 now has 4 USB-C ports instead of USB-A. They mention it when detailing the new Hybrid but I assume they’re being used in all 2025 MY variants.

Thanks. It makes sense as electric motors provide instant torque. I know Toyota doesn't publish torque numbers for its EV vehicles.

The eAWD might sound like a downgrade, but keep in mind the system will never allow the battery to drain low enough to prevent AWD from functioning. Seems like a win-win to me. 54 HP / 89 lb/ft may not sound like much, but at full kilt from 0 RPM with a reduction gear it seems to work fine in real-world scenarios.

As long as people know at only half the power it won't keep up with the 50% split from the turbo motor which gives the rear a max potential of 160 lb ft. I guess it's a fine replacement for the NA model though.
