2013~2016: CX-5 Transfer Case, Front Differential part questions

I'm looking at parts for a 2014 Mazda cx5 sport on the Mazda parts website and it is labeling the front differential and the transfer case as the same thing. Are they the same thing? If not where is the transfer case. I already changed the fluid for the rear differential now I want to change fluid for transfer case and front diff, assuming they are different. Thanks.

Front diff and transfer case are the same thing. Good to hear you changed the rear differential fluid at the back of the car. At the front of the car, you can change the transfer case fluid and the transmission fluid.

No problem! Its a common misconception but an important distinction. I colored a cutaway real quick to show the relationship.
Green is the differential inside the transmission
Red are the CV axles, the passenger side runs through a tube(blue) in the transfer and splines into the spider gears in the front diff.
Blue is the ring and pinion inside the transfer case and the hollow tube which splines directly to the front differential carrier which is how the rear driveshaft turns whenever the ring gear on the front diff turns. The transfer ring gear bolts to the tube portion. The "differential" action between the front and rear is handled by the electronic coupler on the rear diff with controlled clutch slip.

Hey there CX-5 owners.. I looked around the forum for the issue I'm having and this was the closest thread I could find.. I have a 2016 Mazda CX-5 AWD 2.5L Turbo that has a "whine" coming from front end. The whine increases/decreases with car speed, not engine RPM. Diagnosis from 2 different repair shops are :
TECH STATES THERE ARE NO CODES AND THE TRAMSMISSION OPERATES LIKE IT SHOULD
THE NOISE IS COMING FROM THE FINAL DRIVE GEAR AND BEARING IN THE DIFFERENTIAL INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION.
TRANSMISSION WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED AT SOME POINT.

I found a used transmission but need to vet it is compatible with the original transmission. How do I do that? The salvage yard says it will work. The shop that is doing the install says I need to confirm the compatibility because the part numbers differ.

The original transmission part number for your VIN is FW7W03000
The part number for the transmission with the VIN on the tag you provided is a different part number FZ7L190906.
Recommend getting with your vendor to see if they are interchangeable.

Uhg... I'm stuck and don't know how to confirm these parts are compatible.
Can a smarter person than myself point me in the right direction?
Thank you in advance..
Chris

N7, Thank you for your quick reply! The whine starts at about 10 MPH and gets louder as speed increases.
I didn't see your post. I have experienced the final drive whine in every CX-5 I've owned.

However, it normally does not start at 10 mph. This is only something I hear on the highway, when getting up to highway speed (40-60 mph) and when not heavy on the throttle so as to drown it out with engine noise.

I am a little confused though. Did you mean you have a CX-9? You typed 2016 Mazda CX-5 AWD 2.5L Turbo.

I don't have a CX9. I rechecked what I typed and all is correct, CX-5. vin# JM3KE4BY3G0660247.
Hmm... This is a whine that started about 2 months ago. I've got plenty hours of researching this whine and after 2 diagnosis and seeing a YouTube video I came to conclusion of a transmission replacement.

Now I'm wondering if the 2 transmission part numbers are compatible. I don't know where to get that info from..

If you have a turbo car that transmission is incompatible. The turbo cars PN will start with a G instead of an F.

There are a few whining sounds that the Skyactivs can have. The normal sound is caused by using a counter gear shaft that connects the transmission output to the differential. It's a not quite 1:1 ratio that the pinion gear is on and this arrangement will transmit some noise. Another which is possibly what they can have especially pre 2017 is the main bearing in the case that supports the gear train can fail.

It's not possible to have a 2016 CX-5 Turbo; you just have the Sport model. :)

Interesting, thanks.

Good grief.... You would think I would know what engine I have.... Sorry for mis information and appreciate the correction... This is a TSB (attached) put out by Mazda regarding whining noise..
At least the used Transmission I bought also came off of a Sport model..
Yeah about half of the early Skyactivs we overhaul need a new case half, the bearing fails and allows the geartrain to move around too much, it makes a bunch of metal and then eventually causes transmission failure. The FLZ number you posted is likely a serial number vs the part number.
The two attached pictures are the part in the case the bearing race is pressed in and then the second is showing the damaged bearing.

The third picture shows where the transmission Identification sticker is on the case. Salvage yards generally do a decent job of cataloging. If you can post a picture of your original sticker off the transmission in your CX and then a picture off of the replacement unit I can look at it to see compatibility.
