CX-5 to CX-9 upgrade consideration

Lately, I've been thinking of getting CX-9 and trade in one of my CX-5s.

There are 2 issues that I don't know what to think about: One is the lack of room in driver's seat especially in tight/knee area. There is no more room than in CX-5 as far as I could tell. This bothers me but I am sure wife will be okay with it.

2nd, what is the reliability/life expectation of CX-9's turbo?

Anyone care to comment?

Thanks

Why you don't take a test drive with your wife and adjust the seat to a confortable position so you can validate if this is not a real issue for you? The cx9 is a big - long SUV so I believe you will have more space for sure!

Regarding reliability: No one is able to tell you that. We trust in Mazda. I get the cx9 turbo on day one when they start to sell it in Mexico (I'm in MX City). I trust in Japan Engineers. I have 3 year of stock warranty and I pay 3 extra years so at the end, my mechanics is protected by 6 years so I believe we will be fine. If they don't trust on engine, turbo, transmission etc, they don't sell warranty extensions.

Decades ago Sony sell CRT screens with 10 years of CRT screen warranty. Why they do that? Because they trust the screen is reliable and will last at least 10 years without issues. The same for Mazda.

The driver's seat and knee room issue is subjective, so I can't comment on how you or your wife will feel about that, but I'll say that it works for me.

On the turbo, I agree w/ cubanomx that we'll have to see since it's a new design, but Mazda's history w/ their 2.3 liter turbo in the Mazdaspeed6 and Mazdaspeed3 may be somewhat relevant. I have a 2010 MS3 that has had zero turbo problems (and no other problems), but it's only got about 45,000 miles on it. Still, it might be worth doing a little research on that engine. On a related note, given the demands of a turbo, I'm planning to use synthetic motor oil as I have done w/ my MS3. Good luck!

I had a volvo in 2006 and never had issues with the Turbo or Engine.

I had issues with the transmission but that was result of the transmission not "tropicalized" (aka: not ready for mexican streets: lot of bad street, traffic, speed bumps and traffic lights). When I send the volvo to repair, the mechanics had about 20+ volvos and 3 jaguar in the shop.

Ha you're thinking a bigger and more luxurious CX-9?! :) Personally I'd wait a year or two for a new model, especially for a turbo engine unless it's a Lexus.

You're right about the driver's space. Also the center console is a lot higher than CX-5 and other competitors and many people can't get used to that. Unlike CX-5 GT, the power driver seat on CX-9 has only 6-way adjustments which may bother some drivers. Like others have said, both you and your wife need to actually sit in the front of the CX-9 and feel it by you and herself.

Not everything from Japan is the same. I feel Mazda's quality and reliability are hit-and-miss and customer retention rate is very low. Yeah nobody can tell you how reliable new SkyActiv turbo would be. But from past history on turbo CX-7 the record is not very good.

Thanks for all replies.

I'll test drive other cars as well such as Pilot and Highlander.

The turbo is covered by a 5 year/60,000 mile warranty. I've had many cars with turbos and I've never experienced any problems with them. Thanks to the turbo, the engine is pretty darn peppy.

I agree turbo nowadays is more reliable than 10 or 15 years ago. You normally should expect no issues for the first 60K to 100K miles if you follow the manufacture's maintenance schedule and use good synthetic oil with recommended viscosity. But I really have doubt that if the turbo charger can last 150K、200K、or even 250K miles like many Toyota's and Honda's naturally aspirated engines can do!
