Cursed 2014 CX-5 has rust

I can't believe it but when I showed to service manager he confirmed and we are waiting to hear back from Mazda to see if they will authorize repair. The rust appears on the door hinges and is very noticeable, more like a blob than a speck. My CX only has 1800 miles and the service manager said all cars have this problem. I live roughly 12-15 miles from the Atlantic ocean and never been to the beach in the CX, so what gives? Anybody else having the same problem or rust in any other locations?

Salinity and humidity can be major factors, even in that location. Aside from that, best of luck with the repair.

Can you post some pics please. I recently noticed the exact same thing on my 14 cx5. Rust on the door hinges. Only a few months old. Not too pleased.

I live less than a mile from the saltwater here on the West Coast (we call it the Best Coast, lol) and I regularly drive from sea to mountains to ski in the winter where road de-icer use is constant all winter long. I just checked my door hinges and, after two ski seasons, no rust on the hinges or anywhere else I can see except for a normal amount on the steel brake discs. I figure modern Mazda's must use some really effective zinc based under-coating. But that is not a solution on a part like a door hinge. I suspect yours needs a little waterproof grease, nothing to get upset about.

And I agree, a photo is worth 1000 words.

If steel gets wet and doesn't have protection on it than it will rust no matter who makes it. There should be grease on the hinge to protect and lubricate it. Is there grease on it? If not you should put some on it.

There was a tiny bit of rust just starting to show on mine and they were mostly dry so I lubed them. Thanks for bringing this up.

I have an 20 month old CX5 in Black Metallic and I wash it regularly. Before it's scheduled service I noticed a small mark on the front of the roof about 6 inches back from the windscreen. It appeared to be a small stonechip with what looks like spiders legs under the paintwork. I have had it inspected by an approved bodyshop and they say it is due to a stonechip and therefor will not be covered under the anti perforation warranty. The stone chips I have on the bonnet have no corrosion evident but only the one on the roof. The bodyshop did a paint thickness check and were concerned that the thickness on the roof area is only 70 microns thick and the bonnet area is 90 microns. They informed me that all New Mazdas have this potential problem and the thichness they recommend to provide adequate protection is at least 100-120 microns (some difference). I will be approaching Mazda with a request to support the repainting of my roof under the warranty so watch this space. A point of note is that seagulls do use the roof of cars as a good place to discharge with their very acidic droppings. Hopefully I will get it sorted before it gets any worse.
