Cup holder damage

I'm starting to notice some wear and tear on the piece of molding by the heat/cooling controls. The cause of the wear are lids from fast food cups. When placing for example a large cup from Taco Bell into the cup holder, the plastic lid catches on the molding in front of it. When the grey plastic gets hit, it lightens the color, and starts to look like crap. Even when being careful so as to not catch the lid on the molding, its easy to rub or bump it at some time.

Anyone else notice this? Any ideas to protect it? No, I'm not going to stop eating in the car or going to fast food.

Buy smaller drinks.
buy some paint and touch it up.
Put a sticker there.
I would just recommend smaller drinks that don't hit there, but I don't really eat fast food, so I have no idea what issue you are having. Gatorade bottles fit decent and don't hit anything.

Maybe get some 3M Scotchcal film, like they use to protect exterior paint.
