Chevrolet isnt taking a Hyundai-style entry into the small car market when it puts the highly-anticipated Cruze world car in dealers in mid-2010. Rather than offering a full load of equipment for a cut-rate price, Chevrolet says the Cruze will sell for more than the Cobalt as General Motors attempts to regain revenue its losing as the market shifts away from profitable trucks and SUVs into smaller cars.

At first, this might seem like questionable logic for a struggling automaker, but the Malibu, which has been doing well in the eyes of GM, sells for an average of $4,200 over the outgoing model. The current Malibu, which was released for the 2008 model year, features considerably more upmarket engineering and equipment than its predecessor - which GM says will also set the Cruze apart from the Cobalt and its competitors, namely the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic.

According to the Detroit News, Cobalt selling prices averaged $16,455 in August. Thats up from previous months due to healthy demand for small cars but still significantly below its Japanese competitors. Cobalts start at around $14,300 with the turbocharged SS available for nearly $25,000 when fully equipped.

Chevy hasnt released pricing or specification for the Cruze, which will be built in Lordstown, Ohio, but we can expect quite a few upmarket features on the options list. Expect to see navigation, Bluetooth, stability control and maybe even a backup camera.

So it will be another Astra. So the Cobalt might be staying in the lineup when the Cruze is introduced here from what I've read.

With this new car coming up and still keeping the cobalt, will they really need the aveo?

Of course they will still need the Aveo. Its a subcompact and they do sell alot of them.

Exactly; the Astra is one of GMs decent small cars, comes with plenty of features and should have a nice interior.

Except it's priced in an attempt to reflect those features when other cars already offer the same features for a lower price.
Astra sales are doing terrible compared to GM's projections.

Maybe this will still be different because Chevy's name is better known than Saturn.

That can be also the issue here unfortunately, due to the brand people may not want to pay premium for it (scratch)...

Ikes! What's going on with that front qtr. panel? Some very odd lines and creases.
