Crunching sound going over speed bumps?

This is weird, just starting today, there's a sort of crunching/creeking sound coming from my wheel wells whenever I go over a bump fast enough to compress the springs at all. It's pretty loud, very audible from in the car but it feels no different. I'm absolutely sure it never happened before, and the only thing I did was wash my car yesterday. Is it possible for the water to make parts rust in there? Never happened before and I've always sprayed under the wheel wells...

All of your wheel wells at the same time? Probably just one, right?

Check that the wheel well liner hasn't come loose in that well. There's one nylon screw connector directly above the center of each wheel, in the front wells at least, and that single connector is mostly responsible for keeping the inside edge of the wheel well liner from dropping down. If that connector is gone the inside edge can slide all the way down the inside wall where it is normally located and actually rest against the part of the suspension. If that's what happened you would hear a sound on every major bump as the liner gets shoved up and down.

I wouldn't expect that connector to just fall out but someone who worked on the car previously might have forgotten to put it back in.

if you used a pressure washer, or if the water was at a high pressure at all, i could see some water getting in the bushings/mounts or whatever. This will make your suspension squeek. If i'm utterly wrong, someone correct me please.

Okay, its been a while visibly there's absolutely nothing I can tell wrong from looking at it. No pressure washing either. It is stock suspension. I searched around and this time actually managed to find a problem that looks like this:

But looks like this problem is only on MP3's? All four corners are doing it now. The weather is getting cold... No more warranty on mine, so I wonder how badly the dealer will **** me if I get them to look at it...

its not the clunk. thats an issue with the sway bar. i was thinking it might be your springs but you dont have racing beat springs. on the mp3's the springs would squeak so bad it would make you think your car was falling apart during the winter.

Mine does the same thing and i go over speed bumbs everyday. Its gets louder as it gets colder. Every car on campus does it. I think your fine.

Okay, cool, thanks, just checking. Never had another car thats done this, but then again never had anything close to a sporty car with nearly as tight suspension. Ah, joy to drive even in the winter.

My accord used to do that when I switched to poly bushings, my car does it now too. Like you said, it's only when it's really cold, I'm sure it's just the bushings protesting that it's cold outside.

I agree, I think every car that I've owned that had struts (rather than shocks) has made some kind of crunching sound when going over speed bumps and such in cold weather.......

Mine does the same thing. It is worse when the weather is cold or I haven't driven it very far. There are two speed bumps at my work place. On my way to work I don't hear it or it isn't very loud...but when I leave work and I go over the same bumps the car is cold so the noise is more pronounced.

Exactly. Everything creeks and squeeks in colder weather. You also noted you washed your car. Water will freeze anywhere to cause annoying sounds. No concern.

I had a similar problem on our minivan a while back and thought it was the struts. It turned out to be the bushings on the front anti-sway bar. Sprayed a little WD40 on the bushings and the problem went away. The process was spray the WD40 then drove it around. Came back and loosened the middle bushing and reprayed it and the ends. Drove around again the noise was gone.

Hope this helps,

I have the same problem and I've had it since the day I got my car. It does it only when the car is cold. Now that I have brand new Eibach Pro springs and Tokico HP struts, it still does it, so I think it's completely normal and just ignore it. In fact, I feel like it's my engine mounts making noise, but I doubt it.

the creaking on mine seems to come from the front driver side shock assembly, only when the car is cold. when i leave the house in the morning and go over the speed bumps accross the street it creaks, but when coming home after the 1/2 hour drive and coming over those same bumps no creaking.

Yeah, now that you mention it, I realized that it doesn't really do it after driving for a while. But the rear right wheel makes a sort of short squeek regardless of warm/cold... ah well, lots of interesting noises that just as easily mean nothing, I guess. :)
