have any canadians out there ordered any significant items from the US and had them shipped to canada? i'm just wondering what kind of duties are applied to items crossing the border? specifically, i'm looking to order an intake from an american online company. thanks.

Usually you will be hit with just GST and PST on auto parts.

What you really have to watch out for are the brokerage fees the shipping companies make you pay to bring stuff across the border.

UPS and FedEx Ground are the worst. For a $100 USD item you are looking at about $40 CAD in fees. It goes by item value so the more expensive the item is, the higher the fees are.

USPS is the best option. they charge a flat rate of $5.50 CAD for brokerage.

Me and Gujustud ran into this problem when I shipped him my old MHP cold air intake. Just make sure to indicate that the item is a gift worth not very much.

Ya the key is to try to get the person selling you the item to put down "Gift", that way you won't get ***** in brokerage fees. Earlier this year, I bought 2 intakes from the US and got charged $175 Cdn in brokerage fees. Still ended up cheaper than getting them locally! Another time, I bought 2 sets of Eibach springs off of Ebay and only paid $35 Cdn for brokerage fees, only because I told the guy to write down the items were a gift.
