CPe Nano review and impressions...(now with vids)

Just finished installing the CPE X-CEL Nano on my 08 MS3

Right off the bat the quality of this SRI was evident. Of all the SRI/CAIs Ive installed over the years, this unit was by far the best Ive seen. The fit and finish was near flawless. I know that many will say, Hey man, its only a SRIwhats there to go wrong?

Plenty.

So many SRI/CAIs Ive installed fit like s***, most require some rigging to get them to fit without rubbing, some really dont work with the supplied hardware and require some ingenuity to get them to fit properly. Some also throw codes immediately after install. Not the Nano, this thing fits like a glove and required zero rigging on my part to get it to install properly. It lined up perfectly with all the supplied hardware on the first attempt.

That covers the fithow about the finish?

Just as nice, in a market filled with bad plastic, sub par rubber and garbage painted cold steel tubing, the Nano is machine aluminum and high quality rubbertop notch stuff that looked like it was designed/made by someone who actually gives a s*** about quality over quantity. They even used machine socket-head cap screws to hold the MAF sensor in placesomething hardly anyone doesagain, nothing huge but definite attention to detail and stuff like that is highly appreciated in my book.

Lastly is the performance. Im not going to bulls*** you and tell you my Speed transformed into a rocket after install. Nope, like any other good SRI/CAI, the Nano gave instantly improved throttle response. In short it is instantly apparent when driving that when you hit the gas, the engine responds much quicker. As for the butt-dyno resultsthe answer isnt in just yet.

Noise is not a big factor. There is more engine noise and you finally hear that wonderful turbo spool (F-you Mazda for robbing stock cars of that) but its nothing insane for those worried about it.

All-in-all its an easy install (even for beginners), worth the admission price and is a nice safe white toast mod that more than likely wont cause any problems or throw any codes with a proper install.

thanks for the write-up. I just purchased one of these to switch out with my current AEM intake. I love the AEM, but I decided to go with a short ram since they're easier to clean/maintain and this should fit better when I eventually get the CPE FMIC.

Do you have any updated impressions now that it has been on your car for longer? I can't wait to get mine and put it on. I Love CP-E's products.
 
I can't wait for my Nano to get here. Just juiced her up with Redline MT90, and now I want my new mounts and intake to complete the picture!!! Now I just need forge BPV, a TWM short shifter and bushings, and a Dashhawk, and I won't need anymore more daily driving mods! Right? RIGHT? Who am I kidding, I'll probably be going with crazy rims, engine management, sway bars, and coilovers by halloween...
 
It's 3". I measured mine before I put it on in case I decide I want to get a different filter. Still trying to find out more about what kind of job the aFe dry filter does on fine particals. It gets real dusty here in Phoenix.

The Amsoil filter that ships with the BEGi box is also 3", so if I decide to hold onto my old BEGi and try yet another intake out, I'd have that option.

Who knows, If I end up with the Nano I might sell the BEGi with the Nano's filter for super cheap to someone looking for a budget intake system...

The Amsoil that comes with the Begi is a EAAU3051. If I decide to buy one for the Nano I would either get that one or the EaAU3050 which is the same only 1" larger in diameter at the top. Looks like either one would fit fine.
 
You say you haven't noticed performance gains yet but its gotta be better than the stock airbox right? Also is the stock aribox able to be put back for dealer visits just as easy as the CPe install was?

I'm not sure who you're addressing this question to since several people have posted here, but I certainly did notice a performance gain. Yes, you can put the stock intake back on. If I were going swap back and forth often I think I'd carefully grind off the little bit of plastic that sticks out between the two bolts where the Nano bracket attaches to the car. That way you could take the Nano off without removing the self-locking nut from the rubber isolator each time.
