From what I've learned in school, most modern cars can run fine on E85 or even E100 as long as it's tuned for it. You might need bigger injectors, though. It won't degrade your hoses or pipes. Find an easily accessible source of E85, get a tune, and go for it. I was actually thinking of doing the same but the closest gas station with an E85 pump was 25 miles away so just wasn't worth it.

Also consider your gonna get worse mpg, not that is really a concern if your worried about making more power

Its not so much the point of combustion that's the problem (it could be), but the rest of the fuel system isn't designed for it. To include everything from the tank to the pumps to the evap system, etc. Some regular gas components like lines and rubber pieces can't be used with ethanol

And when a system full of ethonol sits for a long time it draws a lot of moisture and seperates the water, which leaves possibility of rust formation. Don't know if our tanks are metal, but that's what happened to boaters when they first started using ethenol

And most non flex fuel cars can run on up to 15% e85 I believ

actually...the newer cars fuel systems already are setup not to corrode from ethanol because of % that is in normal gas...at least thats what i learned in school

tune for it and youll be good, youll need bigger injectors and a better fuel pump for sure, but its gonna be alot more work then its worth

I also feel that e85 would only be good for this car in a pure performance application, but at that point do you want to risk using something the owners manual specifically says not to use? And there are easier mods to get thagt will get the same power boost and better gas mileage (like an intake)

My thought on e85 and flex fuel vehicles is that they get the best use in trucks or any vehicle used for recreational towing. Since towing is automatically going to be more load on an engine knock will be an issue. E85 is going to couner that, and at the same time keep things cooler and boost power (perfect for towing). But at the expense of worse gas mileage, which you're getting anyway whilst towing.

But since its a flex fuel vehicle, you can go back to regular gas when not in tow to give you the gas mileage and the normal everyday power you need and nothing more

switching to E85 will allow to run more boost because of the higher octane rating but its going to require 1.25X as much fuel. This is because there is less energy in a ethanol compared to petrol hence why your gas milage is going to be worse on E85 compared to standard. You can make a ton of power youre just going to need the ability to feed the extra fuel. my $.02

It could probably be made to work with the MS3 engine, but figure you'll need about 40% more fuel to reach a stoichiometric burn. A tune + full fuel system upgrade would be required. Unless you're engine is built, however, you probably won't be able to take advantage of E85's high compression tolerance.

Still, though, it would be very cool.

It is cheaper, but not by enough to make up for the lower energy content. Figure 70% of the distance at 90% of the cost, not so great...

Check out our latest update to AccessTUNER Race. We now have unlocked tables to for demanded fuel pressure etc. This may be a good tool for tuning E85 on the MAZDASPEED platform!

I have a ton of info on this but I need to hold off until we are approved as vendors.

If you are going to run E85, run "Rocket Fuel" Racing E85. Its blended with some addititives and it has a stable ROM/RON octane repeatability vs the junk you get from the local pumping staition.
