corksport exhaust problem

just spoke to Travis @ CS and he is sending out the replacement piece right away :) points given for service

update

I installed the new mid-pipe lastnight and it actually fixed 2 problems which I didn't realize were related. In addition to the buzzy exhaust sound/carbon monoxide fumes in the car it fixed, it also solved this wicked sound of 2 metal pieces vibrating against eachother towards the front of the car (not grinding, but vibrating).

Ends up that when under throttle, the split in the resonator was allowing that whole mid-pipe to flex just enough to rub against that metal cross-member peice towards the j-pipe that the exhaust runs over.

With the new replacement piece, I hadn't realized how much of the natural sound of the CS I had lost. It sounds like a race car again (smiles and sighs to self while looking into clouds with tear in eye).

Here are some photos for those of you care (and guess for those who don't (uhm) ). I also have a drive by video for those who'd like to hear it in action with the "show-off" valve (cabpatch) (right click, save as). I didn't rail on it much cuz my 3 year old was in the car with me at the time.

man, that was driving me f'n knuts! So glad it fixed that cuz I was pulling my hair out.

This is exactly what went bad on my CorkSport exhaust, but it was all the way around. I was refused warrnaty replacement, as I'm not the original owner of the exhaust.

My CorkSport epiece is still for sale. If you're an original purchaser, buy mine, and have a spare for the next time the welds go. :)

update

I'm pretty bummed. I was wondering what this sound of rushing air was coming from around my firewall when I hit the accellerator lately. Sounded like a second turbo was spooling. It turns out the replacement mid-pipe with the flex-pipe is kaput after 3 short weeks. I've attached 2 pics of it. First one is of the pipe sitting as I found it and the 2nd is from me simply pulling it out with one arm (couldn't attach the .wmv movie file).

Travis says he will replace this too, but in order to warranty it I have to get front and rear motor mounts. Due to the amount of cracking exhausts they feel it's the motor moving too much thus causing the cracking (that's front and rear engine bay location mounts btw--not the ones on the left and right). He is offering them for $119 to those of us in the same boat.

I'm pretty bummed that in order to get warranty I have to pay $119 more, AND install motormounts in the middle of winter. However, I'm sure Corksport is pretty bummed they have to deal with all of this stuff after the fact.

*If you haven't already, check your flex pipe for this.* He says I'm #3 to have this happen and is posting a letter about it on their site or here (couldn't remember which)*

damn, thats bad. can you take a wider pic so I can see everything? Ive had my new midpipe on for along time & not had this problem...must b a bad batch

gimme yer email address and I'll send you the 20 sec vid of it. I don't have bigger photos anymore.

after some thought

I sent a counter offer to Corksport. I'll keep you all posted. In the meantime the pipe blew completely out today while driving gently (had my son in the car). So, alas, now I am driving with effectively no exhaust; it's coming straight out of the "J" pipe...super.

EDIT: In the interem (sp?) I have the pipe totally rigged together with braided copper wire hooped around both tapered pipes and then wound together. That should last...oh...I dunno...maybe a couple days. (ricer)

Also, the flexpipe goes into that taper no more than the width of my thumb nail (?!). I don't get what held it in in the first place other than just being wedged in there. (boom07)

and funny thing is, how they changed information so that you have to buy awr motor mounts for it to stop breaking. My friend has the CS exhaust with the motormounts and it still broke.

Whoa; that's suprising. Did your friend have the front and rear mounts (i.e. front of engine bay and rear of engine bay), L/R side mounts, or all 4?

Did he have Kartboy exhaust hangers too?

Did he have the version with the flexpipe?

I can understand why CS changed their terms. A company can't stay in business constantly replacing something if they've found a better way to prevent the hassle for not only them, but for the customer. Besides, after I did some digging, I found that cracking exhausts are not unique to CS; they are happening to stock MSP ones, and other 3rd party manufacturer's as well. Therefore, it's aparent that there is a constant in this problem that is not the exhaust.

I think Mazda used the stock Protege motor mounts as well. If I'm correct, then it makes sense that they are causing so many problems. The MSP has 40+ more HP with which to deal.

I ended up getting the Engine L/R motormounts (that's the front and rear of the engine bay) so as to avoid this ordeal in the future. Corksport still stands behind their stuff if you have at least those mounts, so your friend might find help from them after all as long as he purchased the exhaust new, and not second hand.

Stuff goes wrong sometimes, but I'd rather deal with a company like Corksport than many other when it does. They made a frustrating situation a lot easier to resolve. (first)

safari how long have you had it. s*** maybe they should go back to those. CS doesnt even make their exhausts somebody else does. I still like the exhaust its pretty awesome. Im going to get one next month. I just want this issue to be resolved.

you want the newer one, it has the updated flex pipe. I just finally got around to re-installing mine (removed for warranty work) & I am completely in love w/ my car all over again. Before my Bosst gauge was showing a constant 6.5 PSI of boost & w/ the exhaust back on it shoots up to 8PSI & pulls like a biatch....

since feb 04.

Infexion, did your friend have the front and rear mounts (i.e. front of engine bay and rear of engine bay), L/R side mounts, or all 4?

This is important as (according to CS) the flex of the engine on the pipe doesn't matter for the engine bay L/R but more for the engine bay front/back ones.

Damn!!!! They finally get the fix for the vibrating sound on the crossmember and I have the old style pipe still. Well i guess i have to just bend the hangers again, the vibrating sux.......
