Coolant bypass...mod?

I actually have the ES and I have not yet seen any difference in idle or warmup times. It has been pretty hot in NJ though so I don't know how it will be in cold weather. Next time we have a cold night, I will try it out.

so for those that did this, does your car still idle at 700 rpm? how long does it take in the mornings for the idle to be at around 700 rpm?
Like I said before, I did this in my wife's Protege in the past and did not like it. Maybe the MSP is different.

OK. That reminds me. It was in the winter that I did it in my wife's Protege. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Okay, here are my first day observations. As much as I did not want to believe anything has changed, there seems to be a difference. Here you go.
- Prior to this tweak, in the morning, the car is usually is at its best. Meaning, that's when I feel the most power and response. Today after this mod, the car felt the same way morning, afternoon and evening. Power and response has not changed through the day. Nor did it change after it got hotter.
- The car pulled throughout the rpm range and seemed to be smoother.
- The gas pedal no longer gets slushier throughout the day. Before, when the car was already hot, I noticed that there was a softer/slushy feel to the gas pedal and a decrease in power. Now, the pedal seems to hit a stiff spot as you press it down and if you push it deeper into that spot, the car pulls harder and you can definitely feel some extra power. Basically, the gas pedal has more resistance and if you force it, you feel some power.
- No idle change. Not rougher.

These are just my observations. Can't say if everyone will have the same experience but if you do let us know.

I can't say that I have noticed anything different in the way the car idles or performs.

i am about to do this, just wondering how much coolant should i expect to come out of these lines?

I lost like two or three drops. You won't even notice it. I have an ES so can't really speak for the MSP. I did mine when the car was cool so I did not have any coolant spewing.

OK. I'm convinced. But before I do mine, I will take a close look at either a temperature controlled device to close the flow once the engine warms, or a valve that can be easily swithced to allow flow back through the TB in the winter...

This Sunday seems like the perfect time to figure it all out so I will post next week.

But for those wanting to try this here are my install pics.

Damn, nice macro, man. What kind of camera are you using? My Sony does great for everything BUT macro. It just doesn't want to focus up close.

To be honest, it's nothing special. It's a 2.1 megapixel Canon Powershot S100.

omg yall really took this coolant bypass thing to a new level. its simple go to home depot. get the fitting and disconnect 2 coolant lines from the throtlebody. connect those two. i got the idea from doing it on a friends honda

Yes, I agree. Over and above what is required, but when you live in an area that sees 6 months of winter and another 4 months of almost winter, no heat in the TB can be a baaaad thing.

I'm not interested in going to my car in late September and the damn thing wont start or warm up because the daytime temp of 65 dropped to 25 when the sun went down and the cold front moved in.

hmm subscribing for later recall....elaborating on this mod...why not fab up something to run cool water through the intake ports...simple pump small tranny cooler and a few feet of hose and you'd have a tb cooler.....

installed the coolant bypass "mod/tweak" on my P5 today. test drove it for a small bit.. didn't notice any drop in idle or any real gains.. but will drive it a lot more this weekend (going out of town) so i'll see how she feels after warming up a lot more..

In the process of doing, this. It's still about 90 degrees outside so I can in for a drink. I cannot get the bottom hose off... I guess my hand is too fat to fit there with a pair of needle nose pliars. I might have to take some of the intake piping off :( As far as what to cap the piping coming out of the throttle body with go to an auto parts store and get some 3/8" rubber vacuum caps.

Completed... my brother has smaller hands and he helped me out with the final part. I'm too hot and sweaty to sit in my car at the moment, so I havent tested it out yet. I doubt it'll make much of a difference, but we'll see later.

i pulled the bottom line completely off. then ran it over top the bundle of hoses to make the bypass easier

I finished mine earlier tonight...I had to take the intake & upper IC pipes out to get at it. Even then, I still look like I got in a fight with a cat as George (EviLMan) puts it.
