hi all i was thinking about the MazdaSpeeed 6 and i was thinking/ wondering if the 6 speed transmission would perhaps fit in the MazdaSpeed protege.
that would be amazing to have a six speed trans in the MSP.

well let me know what you think.

Daniel

Uhm... Well, if it's the same stock as the Mazda 3's transmission, it's a G35M-R... I'm not sure if the bell housing is the same as the G15M-R (2.0L Protege's tranny), but if it is, it's cable driven, too. At least the 5 speed is. I'm not sure what code the 6 speed tranny is, exactly, or if it's still going to be cable driven, but I'm sure there's a way to adapt it, as long as the housing and engine mate up properly. If so, then I say go for it, and let us know how it works. =)

I know I'd like a 6M for my car!

here's some useful info instead of the rest of the crap in this post:

All g-series are created equal. Here is a quick list of cars the G-series comes in:

87 Mazda 323 GT
90-94 Protege LX
91-94 Mercury Capri XR2
91-96 Escort GT, LX-E & Mercury Tracer
92-94 MX-3 GS (pos 1.8 v6)
93-97 MX-6 (both 4 and 6 cyl)
93-97 626 (both 4 & 6 cyl)
93-97 Probe (both 4 & 6 cyl)
95-98 Protege ES (1.8 dohc)
97-99 Kia Sephia (1.8 dohc)
97-present Ford Escort & ZX2's (i'm not sure of this but ppl tell me they use G-series too)
98-01 626 4 cyl (not sure about 6, i forgot if its a k-series)
01-03 Protege w/FS motor (2.0LX, ES, MP3, Protege5, MSP, and in 02' all DX and LX's got the 2.0 standard)

Basically any car with a 1.8 BP, 2.0 FS, or any K-series V6 has a G-series transmission, even the Miata. Theoretically you could swap the 6-speed Miata tranny guts into a FWD transmission (if it'll fit in the bellhousing).

thanks for the info. i was just wondering if was possable. maybe i will look into it more with the miata trans. it would be amazing if it worked.

keep the info coming,
thanks again

How would the Miata trans fit? The output shaft will be facing directly towards one wheel... no differential, etc. Can't imagine how this would work out, without a shitload of fabrication anyway.

Six speeds doesn't necessarily mean better, the car will likely be slower in a straight line. Before anyone starts arguing, please think: the more time you spend shifting, the less time you spend actually accelerating. Probably a waste of time, unless you want the "gee-whiz, it's useless, but different" factor...

Definitly. I think it would be better to keep the gear ratios more or less the same, lower the final gear, and sixth gear would have to be extra long in comparison, so you had a nice cruising gear, and have the early gears a tiny bit closer to one and the other.

I dunno, I think our gear ratios are pretty well matched, shorter gears on turbo cars will give diminishing returns... Personally, I still get 24 mpg with mostly city driving, not being very nice to it. A sixth gear is about as necessary as a third nut. About all you'd gain is the 'bragging rights' - "yo my six speed is better than your 5 speed" perfect unless you talk to anyone with a brain.

as a classic example, look at the WRX Sti vs the Evo VIII. sti has 6-speed, evo has 5. both have about the same power stock. and in the 1/4, the evo burns the hell outta the scubie. and its b/c the wrx has to shift so many damn times

Why would you want a six speed. Six speed = slower 0-60 times. All you get is a little more top end but in order to do that you have to shorten the other gears. I have a msp and a se-r spec v. The msp is a 5spd and the spec v is a 6spd, in the msp you can hit 60 in 2nd and in the spec v you have to be in 3rd to hit 60. If you change to a 6spd in the msp you would have to make one extra shift to get to sixty. That's one of the main reasons that the lancer evo is quicker than the wrx sti to 60. The lancer is a 5spd and the sti is a 6 spd. I personally like the taller gears the only advantage to a 6spd is lower rpm at freeway speeds and a littler better gas milage. I would personally rather have low end speed instead of top end speed, but that's just my opinion.

The sixth gear is nothing more than a luxury... That's all. It's nothing to do with performance, and if anyone tells you otherwise, well... Then it's geared wierd, or they're in denial. =) I just like the idea of cruising down the highway at lower revs, is all, for sure.

Besides the fact that I'm NOT a turbo car, I do like our gear ratios, but for an N/A car, they seem a little long at times. But that's all because of how I drive.

yeah well my third testicle is more pimpshit than your two

my friend has a 3rd nut..... and I'd like to have a 6th gear just for cruising down the highways and all.... only if the first 5 gears were to stay the same

i never said i was going to put a six speed in i was just wondering since the MS6 was coming out with a six speed and all. i was just interested to see if it was possible.

thats all, i love my MSP and cant wait till i get some money to buy some more mods for it.
