Considering Selling for an S4...

So recently, after driving around my brothers 01.5 S4 all week, I think I have decided that I want to sell the speed and buy a B5 S4. Consequently, he has decided that he is almost ready to sell his and move on to something. The car as it sits has coils, wheels, an MTM chip, an RS4 grille, a CBE, and a few other things. It has just north of 96,000 miles. I can get it from him for around $9000, and If I can get $18,000 for my speed, I would put a bit of work into it, such as re-spray the front end, new springs, RS4 K04 Turbos, RS4 Fueling, Evolution racewerkes dual intercoolers, and an MTM re-flash. With that setup it could be a reliable DD, and a beast.

What do you guys think?

Sounds like it could be a great project for you.

Its weird because right before answering this I was looking at 05+ S4's. They seem like a more mature yet still fun car to have.

As much as I like speeds S4's are never a bad car option and I think a bit of a upgrade from the speed.

yeah, thanks for not being like "no, they are unreliable" which everyone seems to think about Euro cars, which isn't true. The B5 is a badass car, and, with the money from my car, I could be sitting at around 400 hp with K04s, fueling, and intercoolers.

as long as all the electronics are in order and no issues with the transfer case you will be just fine, but remember you can't haul as much stuff and it will no longer be a sleeper.

I had an 01 audi s4 and out of ALL my cars ive ever owned its the one I really lust after. I WANT ANOTHER S4 SOME DAY!!! obviously i recommend it but at the same time they make me really nervous. If anything goes wrong get out your wallet.

For a daily driver id get a B6 S4, for a project car id get a B5 and upgrade the turbos :-)

I've heard they can be somewhat unreliable, working on the turbos is a biatch, and parts are expensive. No personal experience though, so take that with a grain of salt.

Im not sure about that, it seems as though there are quite a few people blowing up their motors with minimal mods and not even while under WOT. This makes me nervous to keep this car past its warrenty.

I would consider a cars reliability when its stock. Mods can make a car unreliable. Even simple ones.

Also I wouldn't call blowing an engine a reliability issue in this case as something like that is a catastrophic failure and usually considered an anomaly (considered its a pretty uncommon event).

I was under the impression they were tricky and expensive to maintain as well... you're always going to have you're eyes on something else, that's just human nature. I've waffled back and forth about selling it for an STI, Evo, Legacy GT wagon, Forester, MS6, MSP, MSM, RX8, RX7, Protege or Miata to build, a rare 323 GTR, 335i, older M3, like 13 variations of Civic, even a CB7 Accord Wagon to drop a K24 into, a TSX, older 'turbo brick' volvo, DSM, 240z, 300zx, and any daily beater to go along with some of these.

My mind is constantly changing and going back and forth between ideas... and I came up with some sort of 'modding plan' for each and every one of those. They're all just phases really IMO.

yes, there is a guy in my town with a fully built b5. it has close to 600 whp. its ridiculous. everytime i hear/see that car i melt. such a good looking car.

i had a close family friend with one, i remember when he bought it and starting modding it. every ride it that car was like hang on and go! totally rocket status.

yeah, I do completely agree, I go through these phases a lot. For me, however, its either always been the S4 or an E28(1988) BMW M5, E30(1990) BMW M3, or a E34(1993) BMW M5 or an E39 (2002) M5...I wanted an S4 since the day my brother brought it home, and I fully intended to pick up a used one, but my dad said that they were too expensive to maintain. I have always wanted an S4, even when I go through my phases...

S4's are pretty slick cars! I say go for it but it's your decision in the end. Keep in mind you're going from a very new car to a bit of an older car and I would assume you are going up a bit in millage. The Audi will be more costly to maintain but that comes with a higher end car. Like any other car they have their problems but if you take care of the car it should take care of you. Good luck!
