Compatibility of in dash CD players

My daughter has a 1996 626 with the standard AM/FM Tape player. She wants to switch to one with a CD player. I see a lot of these on Ebay for 2000 models. Will these be a plug and play for her car? I am hoping to find one that is an easy installation and spend little money.

What Mazda AM/FM CD units will fit and plug into her `996 626 model?

Thanks
Hank

why does it have to be a mazda am/fm cd player? you can probably get an aftermarket one that is better quality for a cheaper price

He thinks that Mazda headunits would be the only ones compatible.

Any aftermarket cd player + wiring harness + dash kit = (rofl2)

I thought I was clear, but maybe not. I am well aware of aftermarket units and dash and harness kits. Ebay has nice factory radio/CD units going for 20-50 dollars. But, they all seem to be for 2000 model cars. My question was, what model year units will be a direct plug in for a 96 model 626. I figured this forum would know. Maybe not.

I don't know what's on dominoy2k1's mind..

According to http://scosche.com, the 1996 Mazda 626 and the 2001 Mazda 626 both use the same wiring harness. I'm pretty certain that it should work as long as the info is correct.

Both use the following:
<table border="1" bordercolor="#cccccc" cellpadding="5" cellspacing="0" width="455"> <tbody><tr><td width="173">Wiring Harness: </td><td>MA02</td> <td>
</td> </tr> <tr><td width="173">Factory Harness: </td><td>MA02R</td></tr></tbody> </table>

I don't know either. Just decided to let it go.

Thanks for the reply on the wiring harness. As long as the hole in the dash is the same, my problem is fully solve. It seems a lot of 2000 owners are upgarding to better sound systems and a lot of the original factory AM./FM CD units are on Ebay at low prices. And that is just what my daughter needs. She has a small child who spends a lot of time in the back seat and who is entertained with her favorite music from the speakers. It is a matter of domestic sanity.

Thanks again for your help.

From the Wire HArness and Dash Kit Sticky:
1995-2000
Metra: 70-7901
Scosche: MA02
Best Kits: BHA-790

This is true of all mazda's. The protege definitly swapped to a new harness in 2001 but I am not sure about other mazda models.

So other then the units size, you shold be all set. Although I wouldn't spend more then $75 on one as a brand new unit that has a CD player, from Pioneer for example, is only $99. The pioneer will be alot better in many ways but most important to a demanding toddler is that they will play alot of very scratched up discs. Also, you can get a satellite ready unit for $150 for either Sirus or XM, both of which that have child specific programming now:

Either way, i hope she enjoys your purchase

Thanks, I think we have extablished that the harnes is the same, so a 2000 626 am/fm with CD should plug into the harness in a 96 626. I just hope the hole is the same. In looking at pictures, the am/fm cassete unit she has now looks like the same size as the 2000 unit with a singe cd player. Of course, a 5 mm difference in size is not going to show up in a photo, but would totally ruin any install job.

I agree that it makes no sense to pay more than 25-40 for a used one when Crutchfield sell nice ones for 99 and that includes any parts needed for installation. I am assuming that the units have an anti theft provision and I will need the vin number for a used one to get it to work.

for japanese cars the head units are either single din or double din. double dins are twice as tall, that's all there is to it
